So long bat boy, we hardly knew ye...
No more Weekly World News. Too bad, I used to read them in the checkout lane and laugh and laugh.

More on Weekly World News closing
By Ian Randal Strock July 22, 2007

Bob Greenberger, an editor with Weekly World News, reports on his blog that he and the rest of the staff were called into a meeting about noon on Friday where they were "told the Board of Directors has chosen to close Weekly World News. The reasons given make no sense. We're stunned and shell-shocked. We're to stay on through August 3, finishing the reprint issues and then we're done. A glorious, funny, odd publication, born in 1979, will go out with a whimper and all I can think is that something's going on that they're not telling us because it just doesn't make sense."

1. But, but but... who will save us NOW?
And what will we do without informative articles about how to identify if your neighbor is a werewolf?

3. I always thought it would be fun to work for them.
Coming up with the ideas and writing the stories. I always envisioned that staff having a laugh-fest every day.

Who else would bring us classified pictures of a WWII bomber landed on the moon?

I'm still waiting for the followup article on that one.

I started reading that at my first job (bagging groceries at a Winn-Dixie) even then I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever read.

So long Bat Boy

16. It was just the most bizarre thing to see out in the everyday world
I think that that is why I liked it so much. Are Euleene (sp?) formerly of NBC joined the staff early on too. To tell you the truth I think the point they were making is that you take twist any story any way you want- they swore that every story was based somehow on actual news reports (like the goat eating tuna in Russia-actual story). It took twenty-some years for me to see what they were saying

Great newspaper. I never understood why "bat boy" didn't become a comic standby like "crack whore" or something. Bat boy--just too funny

19. I always wondered if there was anyone who actually
BELIEVED their stories. The way they mixed a little truth with a bunch of fiction, I suspect a few folks did fall for a couple of their whoppers.
