All these contaminated food problems should be a good warning to eat natural, not canned/boxed |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 01:46 PM by Rabrrrrrr
And preferably (though this is not possible year-round in most places) eat local.
The more food gets recalled, the more I'm glad I stopped, for the most part, buying canned and boxed shit years ago, except in the occasional emergency.
Stay to the outside ring of the grocery store (fresh produce, fresh meats, fresh dairy, organic raw foods), people - it's healthier, better for you, and far less risk of dying because someone in the factory fucked up or didn't care.

19. That's where the "buy local" part is important. |
|
No lettuce or spinach in a bag if locally grown is sitting on the produce counter. You may still have a small risk of getting sick from locally grown produce but identifying the source and addressing the problem is much easier from a public health standpoint.

3. "The outside ring"-never thought of that |
|
But I do need some paper supplies....what about that?
We went organic almost completely (supplemented with our garden) about the time they killed off 9,000 family pets so as to save a few pennies per 10 pound bag.
I have never felt better.

I need to go to the center aisles to get nails and paper towels. The paper towels are self explanatory-for the cleaning up the mess when I use the nails to "fix" the goose to the 2X4 and shove the corn mash down it's throat you know so I can have my organic foie gras

|
Get whatever you need!
Though personally, I make laces out of the skins of the previous geese, and use those to tie down the new ones. I also use them to keep the veal from wandering around.

I think we'd all be so much better off if we got rid of the manicured lawns and started planting something real. Hell, even if it's flowers and not food it's got to be better than looking at bland green grass

First thing we did when we bought our house was rip out the useless lawn in front of it. We have a small lawn off the patio and that's all.
Flowers are good for the bees, other insects, and birds.

We waste so much water in this country on lawns. Especially in places that aren't, geographically speaking, designed to have grass.

13. ridiculous and impossible advice for people in hurricane country |
|
there is reason that we need access to foods that can be stored, people who are completely dependent on foods bought local that morning to eat are going to be completely worthless in a crisis
there are many good and sensible reasons to stockpile some food in storable form, not just hurricanes but winter storm season in the northern climates comes to mind
in times when people only ate fresh and local people routinely died like flies during harsh weather
next stupid suggestion?

43. The art of cooking seems to be dying... |
|
canned / boxed appeals cause it's fast / easy. It's sure not cheaper, so that can't be why.
I was never taught how to cook and had to figure it out on my own... I imagine lots of people try and are intimidated, so they give up and go back to quick & easy. Sad, really.

44. It's weird, but while American's taste in art is slowly (or fastly) degrading |
|
witness American Idol, the shit that passes for popular music nowadays (which even in the 70s was already shit, but it hits new depths every year), and so on - especially when we have a Republican president - the state of eating and of food is going up. Even fast food chains are falling in line with the better palates and the demand for healthier foods, and even in the processed shit food market, a greater amount is being made without the many chemicals, and with better flavors.
I do agree, though, that the art of cooking is dying out - people are more often buying ready made, or just going out to eat (and, thankfully, people are actually tending to go out to eat at better restaurants than 20 years ago). And when people do cook in, and don't reheat or open a box, they are tending to cook better - thanks to the Food Network, and the greater availability of gourmet ingredients, ethnic foods, and so on.
I just read a book "Nation of Arugula" or something like that (I loaned out my copy, so I can't look and get the exact title) that confirms my theory.
Our taste in art is plummeting - but our taste in food is going up.
Weird.
