Book Recommendations: Nonfiction
Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants by Robert Sullivan.

This was one of the neatest books I ever read. This guy decided to spend a year studying rats in NYC. In the course of it, he learned a lot about history, pest control and, interestingly enough, human nature.

I loved this book.

2. "Custer Died For Your Sins" Vine Deloria Jr.
and

"Killing Custer" by James Welch.

For something different but very good read any and/or all of Mick Foley's autobiographies. Yes, he's a pro wrestler and yes they are worth it. Very well written, and he did write them himself. No ghostwriter.

4. I've never read those
I've had Custer Died For Your Sins on my list for a while - I'll have to grab it.

What do you think of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee?

12. I've read it a couple of times
And found it very powerful and well-written. It also seems to be well-researched. I know you are Blackfoot so I wondered what your perspective might be. I do recommend it. :hi:

3. America's Constitution, A Biography, Akil Reed Amar
chock full of interesting info about our constitution, how it came about, the intent behind the articles and ammendments, etc. Read it while we're losing it folks. It will help us explain what we lost to the next generations. The book begins with the preamble then moves chapter by chapter through the articles and on to the ammendments. I'm just starting the third chapter which is about congressional powers, fourth chapter is about the executive office, I can't wait.

5. Right here

Best non-fiction story ever. Well, except for that one about how the universe was created in six days.

13. I keed, I keed
Actually, I'm reading a bunch of non-fiction stuff right now. Among them are a biography of singers Tim and Jeff Buckley (father and son who both died tragically young), the recording of the Beach Boys' album Smile, and another about The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

They're all scattered about various places in house, but I'll try to get titles later.

I'd be interested in the one about N. Ireland. :hi:

Not because they are religious, but WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF WRITING THAT SERIES. Hell, they aren't even well written, I could do better. I could have made a fortune off the religious nuts who are wanting their vicarious "Ha, Ha, I told you so moment". Damn! Damn! Damn!

8. What your post reminded me of:
Another great read -- The Mole People, by Jennifer Toth.

She follows and lives with some of the people who live in the tunnels beneath NYC. Fascinating, especially the self-sufficiency of some of those people. And the reluctance of some to return to the surface, even given the chance.

9. "Bay of Pigs, the Untold Story" Fascinating.
My ANG squadron participated in the Bay of Pigs.
A couple of years before I joined up.
I flew with a few of the guys who were in it.

The book tells me that the CIA is basically screwed up and they're doing the same kind of shit now that they did then.

And, 'our' Cubans (expats who left when Castro came in) were SO pissed off at JFK after that clusterf*ck, that I'm willing to believe that they might have had a hand in his death.

p.s. Not all JFK's fault. He inherited the operation from Ike.
But there was, as they say, 'plenty of blame to go around'.

If you're at all interested in music, it's a worthwhile read.

19. "Armed Madhouse" by Greg Palast.
I just finished it. It is very upsetting, but the warnings about the 2008 election should be required reading. :scared:
