SNAKES ON A PORCH!!!
Miz t. just came in.
"There's a SNAKE on the screened porch!"
"What kind? How big?"
"I dunno. Looks like a baby. It's dead."

We haven't been out there for a few weeks. Too hot.
It's pretty much dessicated.
About 9" long.
Some kind of garter snake, I think.
Definitely not poisonous.

But we now know that the porch ain't snake-proof.
dern
:-(

1. I like snakes...
well the non poisonous ones anyway. I think they feel neat and I like the way they wrap around your hand. But, hey, I'm a weird girl. I like toads and frogs too, played with them all the time when I was a kid. Oh, and I still love to fish, but I catch and release and kiss them on the head before I throw them back in! LOL! It's true ask matcom!

4. I'm OK with benign ones.
Except they don't make any noise so they startle me.
You just come on 'em in unexpected places.
Once I see 'em I'm OK.

But we do have the rare pygmy rattler.
Which looks like a 'baby' snake.
Moccasins are the biggest concern.
I have a deal with them.
If they don't come on the lot, I don't kill 'em.
So far that's worked OK.

Last year a friend brought in some big potted plants to her sunroom for the winter. A few days later she was fertilizing them and felt a 'sting'. Then she saw the snake coiled around the bottom of the plant. It was a moccasin. I think the ER doc said there was no anti-venom and she got a tetanus shot. The arm swelled up and was feverish and then it subsided a few days later and she was OK.

7. We have water moccasins up here
black snakes, but they are in the lakes and ponds.

My mom brought in her house plants last year and had little lizzards all over the house! She thought she was going crazy, couldn't find the 'hole' were they came in, then remembered the plants! She managed to get most of them out.

8. Mrs.M, in New England I think you mean a water snake
They're big scary-looking guys (range of colors, including black, 2-4 ft long) but they're nonvenomous.

The only venomous snakes in Mass are rattlesnakes and copperheads.

Mocassins are southern snakes.

2. Our yard - woodpile- was infested with garter snakes

Overall I caught 30 garter snakes in our yard. Me! who hates snakes. I hated them so bad I HAD to get rid of them - so armed with an empty joint compound bucket and a piece of plywood I caught 30 snakes.

over the course of a few years. Then I'd march down the street with all the kid in the neighborhood and we'd go let in loose in the woods.

I overcame that fear!
