Why is tilapia a word i keep reading lately
I don't remember seeing this word several years ago. Is this some kind of fish that killed all the perch or something and now the Aldi is trying to make a buck selling it?

2. No, it's an African fish that is now being cultured in the US for the commercial fish market
And it's damn tasty too. It really poses very little threat to the US fisheries, because it requires very warm (like above 85°) to thrive.

4. It does have the potential to escape into the wild
And it is extremely hardy and adapts well to various conditions. It is already in water bodies in Florida and Texas, and it is potentially very destructive to native species.

8. That's true, but it can't survive under about 80°
That's why I was saying it's not likely to be very destructive to most of the US - it can't survive winters north of southern MS/AL. Florida and Texas of course it could thrive in.

6. i think the fisherfolk killed all the perch, cod, etc.

then it became necessary to breed the tilapia, originally from lake victoria (or so i've been led to believe, anyhoo it comes from africa i'm fairly certain and i THINK from east africa)

this is a tough as nails fish that can survive poor conditions, making it a good fish for farming

however, i heard of escapee tilapia being infected with botulism leading to the deaths of many pelicans and other waterfowl in california, not sure if this is urban legend tho -- the tough as nails implying the fish don't die because of the botulism, thus was caught up by the pelicans -- again, not sure if this is true

as far as in the kitchen, it is a mild fish so works well in many recipes, and it's kinda thin so cooks pretty quickly too

have to admit i've come to rely on it for instant quickie fish almondine

it would not be a fish i'd serve rare or sushi because of the above urban legend but i'm quite possibly just being silly
