2. One version of Zork II allowed you to off the robot! |
|
I know, it's mean to laugh at a poor robot's misfortune. But I remember playing Zork II in the 80's and telling the robot to jump down that well (I think "Robot, Jump" was the command. The obedient bucket of bolts did so, and my co-player and I rolled in the floor laughing at:
** The Robot has died **
For some reason I think that option was taken out of later Zork II releases however (apparently each of these games has various versions where bugs are corrected).

Check door at house Check windows Inventory Take water, food, lamp Go S Open manhole cover Take cage Catch bird Free bird Find matches "Plugh"
Strange as it may sound, I got really nostalgic about two months ago and had to find a copy of Adventure. I couldn't find it anywhere and then I remembered that "Zork" was derived from it, so I managed to find a copy of that. I believe that "Colossal Caves" was also based on it (I could be wrong?).
Games magazine actually had an article on it about 1987 or so, with a complete diagram of all the rooms and halls, and mapped them out relative to the cave levels and what was above or below.
I don't think I ever got through the whole thing because I didn't have the patience to do so.
BTW, great copycat thread! :)
