Wily coyote plays the roadrunner

Toying with—almost taunting—its pursuers, animal ends day still basking in its freedom

By Kristen Kridel | Tribune staff reporter
11:23 PM CDT, July 23, 2007

The coyote lounged beneath a bush Monday morning in Lincoln Park, keeping an eye on the van from Animal Care and Control.

Inside the van, the officers were staring back, waiting for backup before making their move.

But as soon as help arrived and Inspector Marstine Crayton started to move forward with a tranquilizer gun, the coyote was off.

It was like that all day. The wild animal played hide-and-seek with police officers and later the Animal Care and Control team for more than five hours. The last three hours were spent chasing the coyote back and forth from baseball fields at Lake Shore Drive and LaSalle Street to the yard of Cardinal Francis George's residence at North Avenue and State Street.

1. I was always a coyote fan
always thought he should sue that evil corporate entity Acme for all the defective products that ruin his well thought out and executed plans just to get his dinner.

5. Considering all the money he spends with Acme, he could have
every meal catered by Olive Garden.

2. I once saw a coyote in St. Boniface Cemetery at Clark and Lawrence....
It was maybe 30 feet off. We stared each other down as I hightailed it back to the car from the family monument and got the hell out of there.

12. Saw them in the center of town A LOT when I lived in Tucson
Had the honor of being accepted for company in very early morning (3-4 AM) walks in my old neighborhood.

They are incredible animals. But one keeps one's cats and small dogs away from them. ;)

15. Last week
I saw a coyote sitting by the side St. Mary's Road (a well-traveled Lake County road that runs paralel to I-94) during my morning commute. He was watching the traffic go by, like he was waiting for a good time to cross the road. They're everywhere lately.

13. The coyotes are revolting

(actually, it's the people who're revolting...the coyotes are just taking over)

I just happened to stroll past a TV that flashed the news of a coyote today, here in Las Vegas, eluding animal control officers for five hours. Same species, same showdown, same length of time. I guess nobody had a tranquilizer gun handy.

The coyote got lots of exercise. By the look of it -- Las Vegas is, after all, in the USA, where walking is typically considered a Subversive Activity -- the officers were mainly tooling around in their SUV.

Go, Wile, go....
