10. Naivete has nothing to do with it.
Idealism, whether feasible or not, has nobility on its side.

While not a strict Marxist, I am of the committed belief that until we have a World-Wide Socialist Government of some sort, we as a species are just fast tracking ourselves down an evolutionary dead end.

21. read "Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844"
one of the best political writings of all time. Marx was a brilliant visionary, and these documents lay out just how "communism" (I quote because Marx only used that word because socialism had already been taken by a bunch of holigans he didnt agree with) should be implemented, would work, and a glimmer of hope of what the perfect society might be.

7. Marie Antoinette strolling through the French Quarter on Bastille Day
Usually one can spy more then one Marie strolling about on their way to raucous jocularity and losing their heads in the process.

and she was dressed to the nines and holding court on Bourbon Street through a light drizzle. Regardless of the time of year ya never know what ya might spy in the quarter. I think I might go down tomorrow.

8. The French Rev. was a combination of all these things and more...
It can't be seen as a triumph for democracy, because democracy was so short-lived — Napoleon came along only a few years after the establishment of the Republic. It could even be seen as an illustration of our Founding Fathers' distrust of true democracy, which they often referred to as "mob rule." Nevertheless, it's guiding principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity have been the backbone of European democratic republics from then till now. Indeed, one could argue that without the French Revolution, most of Europe would still be under constitutional monarchies with the monarch still having some power (unlike the modern example of Britain and its extremely expensive puppet monarch). Hell, a lot of things could've gone differently. If Marshal Grouchy forced a march against the retreating Prussians and prevented them from reaching Wavre, and thus backing up the Duke of Wellington against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, we could all be speaking French today.

(P.S. Despite having gone to Journalism School and majoring in that, my favorite class in college was History of the French Revolution. Absolutely enthralling stuff. The human tragedy, writ large.)

28. I voted for option number two
because France had gone so far into debt to support the Continental Army that they couldn't sustain their normal level of control in their own country anymore. I don't know a whole lot about that period of history, but I'd wager that if their finances hadn't been so strapped, the monarchy could have averted a crisis either by buying off the revolutionaries with financial concessions or just levying a massive army to crush dissent.
