On Love....from Kahlil Gibran... |
|
The older I get, the more wisdom I see in this man's writings...
This quote spoke to me today:
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
Such beautiful words!
What does he say to you?

1. My favorite quote from Khalil Gibran |
|
“But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

Children
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children."
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I put this in a note to my son when he was younger - it's now in a box of his belongings for him to find much later in his life.

but unconvincing.
These beautiful words give no payoff for the investment.... these words merely describe the risk.

I think you might find it really good to read...
It's a slender little volume...well worth having, IMHO!

I discovered Gibran many years ago. Named my first cat "Kahlil" in his honor, read "The Prophet" to my father as he lay dying. Maybe it's time to read it again for myself.
Thanks for bringing a nice moment to my day, CP.

Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 04:08 PM by hippywife
The Children was always my favorite chapter when I was a teenager but I could never get my parents to understand it.
Haven't touched it in a long time. Might be time to pick it up again. Will have to wait until I finish the Tao te Ching and Gandhi's "My Experiments with Truth" which I just picked up today.
Thanx for reminding me, Peggy! :hi:

I have always liked his stuff and now I realize that I am so overdue on reading his things. One of my favorites is
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” Kahlil Gibran
Thanks for the reminder, Peggy!
