6. I know all about them
thanks for the link, that is a great page.

I have owned Staffordshire Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and various mixes of what people might call "pitbulls" for over 30 years, so I know a bit about these dogs. "American Pit Bull Terrier" is a breed that is recognized by the UKC and some other registries, but not the AKC.

"Pitbull" is a sensationalist media description of just about any viscious dog they can manage to pin it on.

8. I use that breed because that is the breed pictured in the quiz
they don't use an am staff and I didn't want to confuse anyone. I have worked in a several kennels and I got some of the more exotic breeds on that page right (dog de bordeaux, presa canario, dogo argentina, rhodesian ridgeback, etc, etc) but I'm ashamed to say that the APBT is one of the last pics I clicked on. I am thinking that many of the pits nowadays have to be mixed with american bull dogs...that must be where the size is coming from.

11. yeah
the one they have pictured as an AmPit is a pretty poor and scrawny example.

The "breeders" breeding "pits" now have thrown in probably just about everything but the kitchen sink at one time or another. That's probably why the AKC won't certify the breed.

As for size, I suspect you're right. Bird dogs don't make a bad mix to size them up either. Here is a pic of my current dog, she's a rescue from the pound. They told me they thought she was a "pit and pointer mix" which looks about right to me. Best dog I have ever owned.Loyal to her master sweet to her family, watchful of strangers.

19. beautiful
I've always wanted a white dog just so I could throw it in the bathtub and shine it up with Snowy Coat. She doesn't look like she's missed any meals, lol. It seems like when I see pit bulls on the news they are the size of american bull dogs but with a bulldog body and docked ears and tail, they are called pit bull. Does she point?

I didn't click on that one because of the ears, lol. Stupid mistake. I didn't recognize the Jack Russel or the lab either (in fairness that lab is fat, lol). I thought it was a fun test, though.

Yes, she points :)

I had a guy stop in front of my house, back up and just stare at her one day. When I asked him what he was lookin at, he said, "I ain't never seen no pit bulldog that big and I DAMN sure ain't never seen one a pointin' before" When I explained what she was, he said "well, that makes sense then" and drove off.

for the record, this was my first pick on the test:

on the bulldog. And when I was stumped I picked it again.

That is so funny what you are saying about the guy freaking out because the dog was pointing.

But it really does have more of a bulldog face. I am becoming more and more suspicious about this American bulldog fellow. When you consider his size, and the facial features he is probably culpable for a lot of the problems but getting off scot free...it makes me think that newscasters should switch from saying pit bull to 'bulldog breed' on the news.

If they wer going to identify it by it's breed, they could at least investigate and use a legitimate breed title, no?

47. you can "assume" anything you wish
about my "bias", but as I stated in an earlier post, I have owned, cared for, rescued and loved dogs from the various "bully breeds" for over 30 years. The only dog I ever had attack and injure me seriously in my life was a German Shepard.

Now, I would suggest that if the local media here were actually into accurate reporting, they first strike the term "pitbull" from their vocabulary. If they wish to verify and identify the dog as an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or a mix derived from any of those proper breed names, I'd be ok with that.

Instead, they scream "pitbull" and then cut to a shot of some dudley nosed, undershot jawed, pink-eyed whatever the hell dog that some goofball without a clue thought it would be a good idea to "breed" and feed the masses calling for laws that would ban many perfectly good dogs including mine.

And one of our local affiliates has a godawful picture of what I'm 99.9% positive is a Presa Canario with it's mouth gaping wide open and the words "pitbull attack" that it uses for a graphic with every dog attack story they run here. They could certainly bolster their credibility with me if they would just get rid of that damn thing.

but yeah, my bias distorts my perception.....:eyes:

they are known as American Stafforshire terriers, smaller than dogos and other bulldog breeds

I'm careful around *any* animal with babies, I know the look you are talking about, when their eyes tend to get very dark, I've seen it a few times working with dogs and it is a danger sign they they have decided you are a foe and not a friend. I've never been bitten under that circumstance, but I know the look when I see it and react appropriately. Any animal with young will protect them from strangers, so it's definitely wise to use caution.

when you see their eyes darken like that, it is not a good feeling. Still, I really would love to have a Great Pyrenees one day. That is the breed I have wanted my whole life, but I really can't justify it. The dogs that I am supposed to take care of always show up in my life of their own volition..so I guess if a Pyrenees ever walks up in my yard and is truly homeless I'll have one, lol

54. I had a Great Pyrenese...
She was killed by a pack of coyotes.

Great Pyrenees are sight hounds...very territorial, but the most gentle, lovable dog I ever had.

No fence could contain her, though. They love to visit neighbors, even if the neighbors live a mile away. Love children, too--very protective of them. We live next door to a horse stable, and she thought it her duty to protect the horses from the coyotes.

Matilda was born to a pair of working GPs that patrolled a goat farm. They are best as working dogs--they have to be out there protecting their family and domestic animals, or they are unhappy.

If I can dig up an old photo of Matilda, I'll post it.

That is so sad that she died that way.

I might just take the leap and get one one day...I've always wanted a white dog whose coat I could fawn over and I really don't like spitzes and the other large white long-haired dog breed I can't think of right now...it is similar to a pyrenees but doesn't have the square jaw.

edit: a Samoyed, I just remembered the name of them...don't really want one of those.

35. I think it's important that people know
about American Staffordshire Terriers, or American Pit Bull Terriers, as pictured on the quiz. Mainly because they are smaller by breed standard than just about all the dogs shown on the news when these stories come up. It's important to establish that some, if not all, of the accused dogs are mixed breeds. And that terminology is used by rescue organizations and animal shelters, as well.

http://pbrc.net/webapp/cgi-bin/orgs_by_state.cgi/e9f03472f474167fa9ffdd6cba1dec16

plus sometimes their owners identify them as pit bulls.

we had a hit-by-car puppy at the vet that I worked at years ago, and it had one broken leg on one side and fractured hip bone on the other, requiring the end of the bone to be removed (an osteotomy) and that little guy was the most tough, stoic little critter...it was heart breaking how tough he was. He went through it like a pro.
