Anyone know what's happened to Netflix?
Their site was supposed to come back online this morning and then was delayed until the afternoon and now there's no commitment about when it will come back.

6. FIGURES! The only huge company that actually WORKS.
Everything about Netflix works just like they say. I even sent a personal disc once by mistake and they sent it right back for free. And they just started offering a certain number of movies free online (but just for PCs so far). I was soooo happy with this service.... it just figures something bad would happen to the company.

8. I hope that they'll pull through
I've had them for a couple of years and haven't had any problems. (well, occasionally I'll get a DVD that skips, but I do have an el cheapo player.)

10. I'm actually considering switching to BlockBuster
NetFlix has been "throttling" one of my often-used accounts -- the one I got for my retired parents. Because my folks view 10-11 DVDs a month the newest releases are being withheld from them and given to newer subscribers or those that don't use the service that often. Since I have a second account that ships from the same facility I know that this is happening. I get the same DVDs they are being denied. Frustrates the hell out of me, especially since I had up to four accounts with them at one time (Christmas/Birthday gifts).

It's not just me -- it's standard operating practice

12. Bummer.
I tend to not get new releases anyway. If there's something that I really want to see, I catch it at the theater. I really enjoy the foreign and older films.

14. Here are 5 foreign-language films I highly recommend...
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 10:35 AM by bob_weaver
Ladri di biciclette (1948, Italy) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040522/
Tôkyô monogatari (1953, Japan) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046438/
Soy Cuba (1964, Russia-Cuba) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058604/
Au Hasard Balthazar (1966, France) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060138/
El Norte (1983, USA) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085482/

All of these go way beyond anything Hollywood has ever done. I am pretty sure Netflix carries all of them.

but it doesn't really matter to me. My list is long and I am still getting so many a month it's still a great deal.

15. Works? What country do you live in
Netflix is a shit company that advertises falsely that these DVDs are being shipped out almost overnight.

Mind you, I'm not upset if I don't get next day service but I would like to have something a tad bit quicker than 10 FRICKING DAYS between DVD. Hell, I only live an hour from one of Netflix's distribution centers.

There have been several class-action lawsuits against Netflix for this false advertising

16. That's weird. I've never heard of anyone having those problems with Netflix.
I get a two day turnaround every time. My only issue with them has involved technical assistance. Their "Watch Now" function is malfuntioning for me--keeps telling me I'm using the wrong operating system--and they have not been helpful in fixing it. But their online viewing selection sucks, anyway.

I've heard that people who flip all their movies as soon as the get them wind up on a delay system, but I don't have enough time to watch that many films. I go through two a week, maybe. Are the routinely taking 10 days, or is this an occasional occurrence?

17. I cancelled after this happened 3 times in a row
I usually have the movies for 2-4 days before I return.

But if I were flipping these DVDs back the day I received them I still shouldn't have to wait a long period of time for my next set unless I happen to pay for the '4 DVDs total a month' program.

Maybe the distribution center near you sucks. I've dumped companies for less. :)

22. It happens to us
We've been pissed at times, and considered switching to Blockbuster, but I searched Blockbuster's site for titles on my queue. They were lacking in obscure titles and documentaries. As you might expect, they favor blockbuster movies. I rarely watch the big hits.

Over all, I find NF to be worth the money, and I'd hate to lose them.

27. The obscure films
might be in fewer distribution centers, so they might take longer to get to you. I remember once ordering something pretty bizarre, and having it take a bit longer than normal. I usually avoid obscure titles, though--I have bad luck, and always wind up with dull stuff. So my experiences there are limited.

28. They can't control the US mail
How do you know it's not a mail problem?

Sometimes it takes longer, but usually the whole thing (returning one and getting another) takes 3 days. Day 1: I mail it back. Day 2: They mail me another. Day 3: I receive it.

I'm happy with my service.

30. That's how my timetable works out
Same timetable unless the movie I picked is coming from a different dist center, which will add 1-2 days.

Except when the world's worst mailman (wwmm) decides to act up again. When he was on vacation a month ago for several weeks, I noticed a huge improvement in the time lags I would get for ALL of my mail, not just netflix, plus, the substitute mm came to my house EVERYDAY, instead of skipping days! The wwmm has even refused to take outgoing mail/packages, once leaving a box on the step from my front walk to sidewalk (a good 15ft from my porch). I caught him the next day and ripped him a new one, as I was returning something I'd bought that was NOT cheap.

I called the post office AGAIN last month, but this time to say that for the first time in 2 years, my mail was moving efficiently and wasn't missing, torn up, poorly handled, etc etc. Since then, even though wwmm is back on his route, stuff has been moving well. USPS probably as a lot more to do with shipping problems than people believe.

Blockbuster wouldn't serve my needs, I don't go into video stores and their selection is lacking, with little difference in price.

32. This is the only time
I've ever had a problem, but this guy sucks and he NEVER misses a day of work, so it's neverending, and the PO hasn't ever made a move to address my complaints. I'm hoping this recent improvement sticks, honey being better than vinegar etc etc.

33. Speaking of bad mail service...
Yesterday I sent a postcard with an address label on it to give the recipient my new address. Today I received it back in the mail. They mailed it back to me. The recipient's address is CLEARLY in the traditional recipient area, and if that wasn't enough to go on, there was the note above the label: Here's my new address. And the recipient is in a different state... so perhaps that could have tipped them off.

3. No and I am particularly disturbed about this.
My film, Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?, is going to be released on Netflix next month. They just put up the link to let people put it in their queu and review the film. I was going to post that on DU, but the site has been down for the past day.

When it goes back up, will all of the DU Netflix Members do me a favor and go give our film a great review (also put it in your queu)?

Thanks!!!!!

9. OMG! craigslist, too!
This is the message on the craigslist site:

"ERROR

Craigslist and many other sites are having issues at the colo facility.

Please sit tight, and try again later.

We are aware of the situation, and the happy craigslist elves are scurrying to make it better, even now."

24. Those who watch streaming movies
Sadly, they have a poor selection for now, so here's a recommendation.

Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? is a documentary about a truck-driving woman who buys a Jackson Pollock in a thrift shop for $5. Hilarity ensues as she takes on the art world to prove it's genuine. Very entertaining true story.
