Rest in peace, my wren friend... |
|
:( The wren modified an old sparrow's nest high up in a corner of the porch last spring; and tried all last summer to get a female to take a liking to it. But the females were too freaked out by our comings and goings. It's too bad, because no cat could possibly get to it. The male trusted us, because I feed the birds. He roosted there during the winter; but seemed to abandon the nest this spring.
I noticed a funky "dead" odor a few days ago; but couldn't find anything. Then I looked up last night and saw a bird's head peering over the nest. I left it alone, in case he was just sleeping; but he was in the same spot today. I nudged it with a broom handle, and sure enough, the poor critter is dead.
I'm going to miss his songs, his strutting around on the porch, and his fondness for our holiday wreaths.

there was this pigeon in front of one of my model homes yesterday. It was panting. I threw water on it to try to cool it down. I knew something was wrong. I felt terrible about it. I came back in this morning and he was dead.......
Probably poisoned.

sounds like you are a tender heart, GoG. I wouldn't be any other way, myself, but it does make for some sadness.
I hope the wren has found a mate in birdie afterlife, or has come back as whatever he wants to be.

while feeling these sad thoughts about it passing, know that being able to feel that makes you more a human than a lot of folks I have seen in this world :)

instead of winding up on a sidewalk somewhere.

8. I saw something today that might make you feel better. |
|
I get old bread for the birds and today I saw a father cardinal feeding two of his young ones.
The young ones can fly but they stayed in the little tree and the father would bring bread to them.
This is the first first year that I have seen cardinals around here.

It's sweet to watch the parents care for their young. We've had fledgling robins in our yard the last week or so, learning the ropes of flying. :-)

16. The cardinals seem to prefer more wooded areas but we now have |
|
I think two pairs.
We now have a lot of the young birds coming to eat the bread, some of them can fly better then others.
I feel like mother nature watching the young birds with all the all bread and bird seed I have put out for their parents.
We have blue jays but they stay in the front of house and prefer cat food to bread or bird seed and make a total mess of the front bird bath.
I am sorry for your little wren, rest in peace little one.

17. Someone told me recently that cardinals never used to winter |

north of Florida; but that bird-feeding enthusiasts have expanded their original range...

18. I have seen cardinals in Memorial Park for years but never in my yard. |
|
We even have blue herons here, we have a least on pair, and they walk down the yards at night looking for crawdads in the ditches.
I think they like the little lake across the street in the old railroad yard.

The existential ramifications of a bird that has no concept of humanity being mourned in cyberspace is freaking me out. It's cool though.

25. I'm going to have to find a place to bury him... |
|
He brought too much pleasure to just toss his body away.
I think I'll take the nest down and bury him with it. I hope we get some rain tonight to make digging easier...
