Videophiles - why would progressive scan interpolate the field frames backwards?
Playing movies on my system looks great.

But TV shows are showing obvious interlaced artifacting in moving areas.

Using an HDMI cable, checking to ensure TV is receiving a 720P signal from the DVD player, why would it merge the two fields in reverse, causing the interlace problem?

Thanks!

1. It's not interpolating the fields backwards
Interlaced video (NTSC) is shot 60 fields per sec., with even and odd field alternating to make 30 frames per second. When interlaced video is shown on a progressive scan monitor, the scans will alternate between even and odd line, but will show them as full frame, instead of alternating lines. Since the scan lines in the NTSC have been recorded at different points in time and then averaged together, it can introduce motion artifacts.

3. Oh. Would still items look jagged as well; part of the interlace artifacting?
Credits text looks jagged too...

I still don't fully understand, especially when films on DVD (movies) don't do it. I'll get used to it somehow...

6. Even moving lips when the characters are talking? (typically horizontal detail)

Thx for the link; I am learning more and more... though if all this gear provides deinterlacing, it's funny that the moving images consistently produce this effect.

I think the problem is 'weaving' - see above link

13. Actually, I just found the actual problem:
http://neuron2.net/LVG/default.htm

I want to say the fields are being processed in reverse order, hence the combing effect. Still trying to fathom why this is happening... (probably a bad disc encode, but for more than one disc and on more than one series? )

10. Question: how do they convert 24fps film to 25fps TV/video?
I have long wondered what they do about the frame rate difference.
