7. During the Democratic debate last night, questions were fielded via youtube submissions.
A gun owner asked what the candidates would do to protect his baby.

Then he held up a firearm that looked dangerous.

I just give up. I really do.

Ptah, you and I, and all the other few rational people left in this country, we need to just give the fuck up and tend to our gardens and our families and ignore everything else because it's all just gone fucking nuts, hasn't it?

We REALLY need to do that. His GUN is his fucking BABY. And THAT got included in a Presidential debate?

Where, oh WHERE did my America go?

simply CANNOT understand. Is it pandering to the Gun Nuts? Comic Relief? (If so, it's NOT funny.)

I'd genuinely appreciate your commentary. This thread is the first I've heard of this (to me) inexplicable inclusion in the YouTube questions.

Thanks in advance for your response, because I find this deeply troubling.

:-)

I dunno what that guy on Youtube was thinking. Unless maybe he was ex-infantry or ex-Marine or something. It's possible that his like of firearms has turned into some sort of fixation, I guess. It's not that he's happy he owns that particular one, it's that he's anthropomorphizing it.

I understand pride of ownership. This seems to go beyond that.

I guess I could see if he had a rare, historic, and/or expensive rifle. Something to be really proud of. Maybe his Grandpa's Luger that he took off of a dead Nazi at Normandy, or his great-great-Grandpa's original Colt Peacemaker. Something with some history with it.

I mean, I'm sure his AR-15 is a very nice gun that he can shoot well, BUT you really need some 'oompth' before you begin dressing it up in bonnets and booties, yanno?

Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 10:06 PM by Redstone
I'd rather not associate with. People who think of GUNS as "their babies" strike me as being deeply, fundamentally disturbed.

Last I heard, "babies" referred to HUMAN sons and daughters. Not to manufactured assemblies produced for the specific purpose of killing people's sons and daughters.

But that's just me.

54. About 1 in 4 Dems personally owns a gun...
and about 27% of indies. Most are nonhunters (4 out of 5).

Since the rifle that YouTube Guy had is arguably the most popular civilian target rifle in America, I'd say that it was indeed a relevant question, considering the number of Dems who are gun owners (and for many gunnies, a candidate's stance on the issue is a potential deal-breaker). Although I'm sure that CNN purposely picked a guy who would come across as wierd; it was a setup in that sense, I think.

than most Dems, or the public at large, and regularly runs hitpieces on the topic.

They picked that guy on purpose, and in that sense it was something of a setup for the candidates, I think.

51. It's the hole in the end of the barrel that's the dangerous part...
not what the rifle is shaped like.

The rifle the guy had (civilian AR-15 type carbine, which is the most popular civilian target rifle in America, excluding rimfires) is functionally identical to this "friendly looking" rifle (same caliber, same rate of fire, same range of capacities, same everything):

Which can also look like this:

And this:

Depending on what stock you put on it.

Rifles are rarely used in violent crimes in the U.S., though (less than 3% of all murders, per the FBI).

33. Many gun owners are fond of their guns
While I wouldn't use that expression, the question as to how the major Democratic candidates view the right to keep and bear arms is a legitimate one and getting a rather more colorful member of the gun owning public to ask the question makes for good tv.

...if it's civil war in America and I'm huddled behind a ruined building with an AK in my hands and that AK is the only thing keeping me alive and out of the Bush administration's hands, I may form a fond attachment to my rifle.

I'd rather not test out that hypothesis, however. I wuv my kitty and birdie. And my wife, too. Why not? :hi:
