Joni Mitchell to release first album of new compositions since 1998
NEW YORK - Joni Mitchell is following the lead of Paul McCartney in joining with the coffee giant Starbucks to release her comeback album.

Hear Music, a record label formed in partnership with Starbucks Corp. and the Concord Music Group, said Wednesday that Mitchell is its second signing. "Shine," her first album of new compositions since 1998, will be released on Sept. 25.

2. You bring tidings of great joy. Thanks for this news.
Very welcome at my house.

Ms. Mitchell is a longtime favorite and a full-throttle genius.

And the bumping of the logs
And the moon swept down black water
Like an empty spotlight."

4. I love the old Joni Mitchell
but the last time I heard her do anything (a few years ago) her voice had gone to hell. I sure hope that was only a transient thing.

5. She's a lifetime cigarette smoker. But I'd listen to her
music no matter what.

And my god those lyrics...

6. A Canadian-born folk singer originally. She penned "Woodstock" and
revolutionaized the singer-songwriter genre with BLUE and other albums.

Sojourns in Greenich Village and longtime resident of California. Heavy draw toward jazz idioms. Lyrics as good as anybody's and better than most.

She's been a staple of a lot of people's music collections since the late 1960s. One of the truly talented musicians and poets ever.

7. You must be young
That's cool. I wouldn't know most of today's popular musical icons if they stopped by for tea, so it's no surprise you don't know Joni.

Joni Mitchell was THE diva of late 60's and early 70's music. There were some who sold more records, or got more radio time, but she could both sing better AND write better, and they all knew it. If you have heard anything by her it seems most likely it would have been "Big Yellow Taxi" also know as "Pave Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot", a song which was redone a few years back by Counting Crows unless I am mistaken.

If you have any interest in her music I might recommend you start with Blue, an album she recorded in 1971. you could listen to a few clips at Amazon here, http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Joni-Mitchell/dp/B000002KBU . Please keep in mind that the low-res clips can never truly do justice to her amazing voice. To me the only proper way to listen to Joni is through a set of vintage Bose 501's hooked up to a high quality tube amplifier, a Fisher perhaps, and cranked up until they fill the world with sound. Then again, I'm an old fart in training, so there ya go.
