WOOPS! Discovery Channel's "Man vs. Wild" Actually Stayed In Hotel Rooms

<snip>

Discovery Channel is re-evaluating one of its most popular series, "Man vs. Wild," after allegations surfaced that its survival-expert host was bunking in motels when he was supposed to be braving the great outdoors.

The network issued a statement Monday in response to an investigation launched by British television network Channel 4, which carries the program under the title "Born Survivor: Bear Grylls." Channel 4 confirmed that host Bear Grylls had partaken of indoor accommodations on at least two occasions when his series had depicted him spending the night in the wild.

"Discovery Communications has learned that isolated elements of the 'Man vs. Wild' show in some episodes were not natural to the environment, and that for health and safety concerns the crew and host received some survival assistance while in the field," the network said in a statement.

The production company behind the series, Diverse Television, is cooperating with the Channel 4 investigation, which likely will address a range of allegations that called into question "Wild's" authenticity.

1. I always liked "Survivorman" better anyway.
No way to fake that! He lives out in the wild for 7 days at a stretch, AND he has to film it all himself. No camera crew to bail him out if things get bad.

3. Dammit
x( I liked that show.

I wondered sometimes. He looked a little too neat to have been out in the bush all night. The fact that he *never* has razor stubble is one clue. But he is cute.

8. Yeah, but he drank the juice squeezed out of elephant shit right on camera.
I hope he stayed in a hotel room that night and washed his mouth about 3000 times.

11. Surviorman is probably more authentic but
somehow I find 'man vs wild' more entertaining...better production is possible when you don't have to film yourself and have a camera crew with you I guess...and staying in hotels too apparently :)

Oh well, not like its world shattering news that a 'reality show' is not completely 'real'...the fact it is on tv might be a tip off :)

13. i don't know
i like the whole "bad camera shots" thing, because the guy is really alone in the middle of fucking nowhere, and that gives it a sense of honesty and reality.

19. I've watched parts of it twice. The first time, dude was climbing down into a canyon
He was telling the audience how difficult the climb was, and searching for a way down, and he finally found this one route that he said was hard, but he could probably do it. So they showed him starting down the cliff. Then they showed a shot of him from below, climbing down...

Okay, so the cameraman can carry his gear down...

Maybe I missed some part of the premise, but that was my whole experience with the show, so I wasn't motivated to pencil it into my schedule.

The other time I caught a couple minutes while flipping channels. He peed on a shirt to use as a head cover. Not upsetting, but not riveting.
