Help! A pic of Serge and a dog question:
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 10:20 AM by QMPMom
Rawhide bones: Serge loves them. He is a chewer and has chewed through all of the dog toys we have bought him. He carries around an old soccer ball of the kids when he is in the back yard and that is the only thing he has not destroyed in minutes. He's also chewed halfway through 2 leashes. We now have a chain leash.

How many are too many rawhide bones for a dog?

He is a Siberian Husky/German Shepherd cross and is (supposedly) about 13 months old. I think he is younger than that due to the puppy behaviors that he still exhibits and the *huge* paws.

1. sounds like my dog.
though she no longer gets bones because she doesn't play well with others.

Anyway, for us, I wouldn't do more than one a week. Those things bung our dog up badly. She'd eat the damn thing in one sitting.

Here's a pic of my beast....
as a baby

she's 9 now

2. I wouldn't recommend more than one large bone per week
But, if you are looking for a good toy that your dog can't destroy, try the Kong:

My parents' dog, Thunder, can't chew that one apart although he does chew up every other toy he's ever had. Here he is:

4. 1 is too many rawhides.
Ask your vet how many impactions he's had to clear, choking cases he's had. Rawhides are one of the worst possible things you can give him.

As for toys, Bouviers are very hard on them too. We've found that if you ask at the local firestation if they have any old hose liners, that these can be made into toys that last a very long time with even the hardest dog. The Kong is a good choice, especially stuffed with cheese or peanut butter. Another good one is the buster cube or ball...stuff with dry food, set a difficulty level and watch your dog's intelligence show.

5. Thanks everyone. I guess Serge will now be limited to
one or less per week. It's off to PetsMart for the recommended toys.
