Women who wash with lemon juice after sex to prevent pregnancy are more likely to get cervical cancer but are no more at risk of catching HIV, a survey of sex workers has found.

A study of 374 Nigerian prostitutes found that almost a quarter of women routinely douched with lemon or lime juice after sex to help avoid pregnancy or sexually-transmitted infections.

Many used douching in place of condoms.

Of those who used the method - widely practised in African countries - six per cent had genital warts and nearly one third had vaginal abnormalities which are a precursor to cervical cancer.

Lead researcher Dr Atiene Sagay, from Jos University in Nigeria, told the International AIDS Society conference in Sydney that women douched to avoid infection but it was totally ineffective.

"People suggested it could be a microbicide (but) we know much better than that now," Dr Sagay said.

He said the practice was not an effective contraceptive measure either, as semen kills the citric acid.
