Why is it that shithouse rats are so crazy?

I assume we've all heard the expression, "crazier than a shithouse rat."

What is it about shithouse living that has such a deletrious affect on the rodent psyche? Is it the methane? The disdain of neighbors? Is it cultural or biological? And can treatment help?

These are the kinds of things that keep me up at night...
