Today is our wedding anniversary. (4 years) |
|
Anyway, I get on the train this morning to go to work and I'm looking for a spot, and I finally find a seat near a bunch of women. They start talking about their weddings out of the blue. One was married 25 years ago, another 8 years ago, etc. They each start to share their wedding disaster stories--all the things that went wrong for their big day. One cut her finger and had to wear a big bandage, another has never tried her dress off the pedestal and discovered it was too long on the morning of her wedding, another tried a new face cream and had an allergic reaction. I was just listening and thinking I have you all trumped!
Finally I said, the day before my wedding I was in a horrible car accident. I was married at Stony Brook University Medical Center. And I told them how we didn't want to postpone the wedding because people had traveled from so far away to be there, plus, we didn't know how long I would be in a wheelchair or when I would be able to walk. I told them how the nurses decorated my IV pole with paper wedding bells, and how one of my bridesmaids did henna painting on my arm and hand to mask my lacerations. I told them how all of my family and friends were gathered in the orthopedic gym and how I knew when they pushed my bed into the room and I saw my sweetheart standing thee that I knew to my core we we were doing the right thing.
I had the whole car listening. Then they asked what time of year it was and I told them that today was our anniversary.
Pretty weird, eh? Usually I just sleep on the train. So strange that the only seat I could find was next to ladies who were about to start that particular conversation.

and, a great story.
I don't remember anything big going wrong at any of my weddings, and I've had four of them (one to my ex-wife, and three different weddings to my current wife - one official wedding, one wedding ceremony so her parents could attend - they could not get a Visa for the actual ceremony, and then a 3rd one in China with the rest of my wife's family)

So, did anybody say, "One day we'll all look back on this and laugh"?
Jeez, the only thing that was odd about our wedding was that one of my younger brothers passed out during the ceremony....he as 12 at the time.

Poor kid.
I don't think anyone said anything about laughing. We lost a baby in the accident as well, so that wouldn't have been appropriate. But we did say that our wedding would always be unique and memorable, and that no one who was there would ever forget it. We knew we weren't going to blur in with all the other weddings. That's for sure.

Isn't it odd how things work - that on the day of your anniversary, people would be talking about weddings on the train.
Helluva story.

Funny, a couple days before my wedding I received the dress I'd designed from the dress maker. She'd forgotten to tea-dye my lace before attaching it to the skirt. I thought it was the end of the world. Just think, THAT could have been my wedding mishap story. In a way, I was saved!

Also, a few weeks before my wedding I turned to a co-worker and said, "I'll never walk down the aisle. I think I'm going to get into a car accident or something before the wedding." It just came out of nowhere. It creeped the heck out of my co-worker. Then I just forgot about it, 'cause what was I supposed to do, stay out of all cars?
EDIT: typo and hugs

love story. I'm now officially ashamed that I have spent years recounting my wedding horror stories involving a bad hair-do and food poisoning. Going on 34 years this weekend.
I recently heard about a local woman whose father had a heart attack a few days before her planned wedding. She and her fiance cancelled the fancy church ceremony and restaurant reception and were married at her father's bedside. He passed away the next day. When I was discussing the story with my mom, she asked, "Wouldn't you have done the same thing?" I had to admit I'd certainly have postponed the entire event, but as for getting married in a hospital? I couldn't see myself doing it.
Now your story makes me look at it in a whole new light.
I wish the two of you many many more happy anniversaries.

Losing that baby was the hardest thing I've ever gone through. We planned for her and it took years to conceive. I didn't know if I'd be able to conceive again. It was heartbreaking.
I knew I had to go on with the wedding and just somehow keep going on. I never could have done it without such tremendous support. Having my husband and family and friends, and more friends and all of my lounge friends--all those positive wishes for me, they healed me and carried me through. I owe you all so much.
