I see it as a tribute to the legendary pitcher Satchel Paige.

58. That came from "Satchelmouth", a nickname of Paige's.
Also Woody Allen and Mia Farrow named their kid Satchel.

I have no idea where the name came from but I get a card every year from Seven and her husband Dennis. And her married name makes it sound even more odd. :)

8. Ordinary people come up with some doozies too.
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 01:57 PM by LibDemAlways
My daughter knows a kid, Xcaret, named after an amusement park in Mexico. Imagine how much that girl looks forward to the first day of school. Seriously, though, naming a child shouldn't be taken lightly. Something out of the ordinary or plain strange can do lasting damage. I have an unusual, ethnic-sounding first name which, coupled with my introverted nature, has been - for me - a real hindrance.

13. Shiloh is fine, except it's paired with Pitt...
I knew a Barrett Frain.
His nickname, of course, was Ferret Brain.
Shiloh Pitt would have the same kind of problem.

A lot of those are decent, actually.

My SO's child's given name is long, Welsh and unpronounceable, so I can't really talk too much trash about what others name their children. (He and I both agree that should we have a child together, s/he'll have a shorter, more common name.)

is a dog name.

I've been amused by the trend of the past decade of giving little girls what I call "English sheepdog names"- Taylor, Tyler, Morgan, etc...
I think a lot of suburban yuppies do this because it sounds "English and classy, y'know"
Oh, it sounds English alright...

19. Grace Slick named her baby China
I don't remember who, but about the time Grace had her baby in the mid-70s some other rock star named the baby 'god.' They noted that they didn't capitalize the name, because that might be sacrilegious.

Marquise: 50 Cent

Memphis Eve: Bono

Blue Angel: U2's The Edge and Aislinn O'Sullivan

Heaven: Lil' Mo (also mother to God'Iss Love Stone)

London Emilio: Slash

"50 cent" is not a name. It is the cost of a downtown bus ride.

That's a name you give your kid if you want to guarantee you'll be spending your golden years in a cut-rate retirement home. That goes for "Pilot Inspektor" and "Audio Science", too. ("'Audio Science'? Admit it, mom! I was named after a ratty pair of off-brand headphones, wasn't I? WASN'T I?")

38. I like the name Liberty for a girl.
When my husband and I were discussing kids and tossing out names, that's one that I came up with.

She can always be called Libby for short.

I also didn't think that Gaia, Willow, Poppy, and Shiloh were that bad either.

They didn't put "Blanket" on that list, and that is up there with Audio Science.

46. I know somebody named Liberty.
She always goes by "Liberty" -- never Libby.

I always wondered if her parents had a particular agenda when they named her, i.e. were they rightwingers wanting "Liberty" in the conservative sense, or were they hippies wanting "Liberty" in the groovy sense, or somewhere in between, or nothing of the sort.

I don't know her well enough to ask her.
