Test Your Knowledge of Online Scams |
|
Think you're smart at recognizing online scams? Take a quiz to find out. McAfee Inc.'s SiteAdvisor service has created a 10-question test to see whether you can spot "phishing" attempts to steal passwords and other personal information by mimicking popular Web sites such as eBay Inc.'s PayPal and News Corp.'s MySpace. In eight questions, you are presented with two Web sites or e-mail messages and are asked to identify the authentic one. The final two questions test your general knowledge about scams. -snip-Visit http://tinyurl.com/ytec4u to take the quiz. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/25/AR2007072501482_pf.html

I only missed question 4.
Some of them I had to really scrutinize for spelling mistakes, grammar, missing links, wrong URLs, etc.

Just missed #4. I've never had to worry--I just hover over a link in an email and check the link to see if it's the real deal. Of course, after nearly twenty years online, if I can't spot a phish-scam by now, I deserve to be conned. :)

I've worked System Security and in fraud areas, have been online a long time, and have a naturally skeptical nature. :)

23. Fuck them - as far as I am concerned, I got all 10. They say I got Quest. 4 wrong. |
|
Fuckers - I contest their ruling.
While checking the "from:" field isn't a guarantee, it IS a good first step to checking for spam. It's always my first step. If the spammer is dumb enough to not make the from: field look genuine, then you know you got spam.
They used the very nebulous "One good way to protect yourself", which could be taken many different ways.
I have, indeed, gotten spam from people at hotmail and yahoo and other ludicrous accounts saying they are with paypa, or a bank, or other institution. Yeah, like the customer people at CitiBank are using hotmail accounts.
:eyes:
Fuck McAfee's test - I scored perfect.

I don't click on links that are sent to my various email addresses anyhow, so I'm OK.
Hint: Type in the URL of the website, and NEVER click on an emailed link.
