Big Prayers needed....My Mom got her diagnosis today...
ALS.

I haven't cried yet, b/c if I do, I might not stop. I had to be there for the diagnosis, take my Mom home, and then inform both my brother and my father.

Could somebody stop the planet, b/c I wanna get off now please! x(

I'm not even dealing with this until Monday. I leave tomorrow morning for my honeymoon, and I will be firmly planted on the beach, or by the pool, and drunk either way. Might be my last chance to relax for some time....

Anyway, prayers, vibes, whatever you got, send them our way, if you can.

:)

19. I tender you, of all things, a book selection
(my) Dying is Fun: A Comedy of Disabled Misadventures, by Christopher Day. I happen to be (supposed to be) reviewing it for a disability journal published at UH.

http://www.amazon.com/My-Dying-Fun-Disabled-Misadventures/dp/1425106226/ref=sr_1_8/105-5842004-2510833?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185501413&sr=1-8

Can terminal illness ever be fun? At the peak of his career as an eco-architect, Christopher Day developed Motor Neurone (Lou Gehrig's) Disease. Initially, the future seemed bleak, but as the illness progressed, his attitude changed. The more things went wrong, the more hilarious life became. He began to appreciate the gifts illness has brought.

(my) Dying is Fun is for anyone, or anyone who knows anyone, who might one day die. Especially, it's for anyone who needs to laugh. This book transforms disability and dying into a testament for life.

My capsule review: If Monty Python were to get back together and do a sketch about ALS, it'd probably come out something like this. Day may have ALS, but more importantly, he has that classic dry British sense of humo(u)r. Not for reading whilst drinking hot tea or whatever.

32. OK, first things first.
Have your honeymoon and try and relax and charge your battery as much as possible. You're going to need the energy to feed your inner-strength.

Draw those you love near and lean on each other. You're not in it alone and neither are they.

Lastly, let your mom do as much as she can for herself for as long as she can. It's hard, I know, but unless she says otherwise it's usually the way to go.

I really sorry. :grouphug:

33. She's actually pretty damn active...
Her Dr said that A) In her case, it's verrry slow-progressing (started about 2 years ago), and B) that of the 4 primary centers typically affected, hers is focused in one, for now. So, that's something. She still drives, does laundry, takes care of my Dad with MS, walks the dogs, etc. It's just so bizarre...

Thank you

And yes, she likes TV very much. Hers is an odd case. Very slow progressing, limited mainly to Bulbar symptoms, very little in the arms, legs, lungs. Been almost 2 years since onset. I'm trying to remain optimistic, and doing a motherlode of research, at the moment.

And I will probably take you up on that soon, thank you :pals:

Not on my end, but some others...yes. I think my SIster is going to get a *big* wake-up call when I inform her. I'm not calling anyone until Monday. I'm spent, and I have to call her, my Mom's sister, Mom's brother, and Mom's mother. And probably Dad's sister too. Sigh. And fight with the VA to cover her medicine. Should be an interesting day. :P

You got my good vibes. Leave the problem at home and enjoy your honeymoon. There will be plenty of time to deal with
the diagnosis when you get home.

76. I´m so sorry
My mom has a friend who was diagnosed with ALS way back in the early 80s. She is still alive, and though very limited by the disease, she is still active with her family and friends. She recently got a computer that speaks for her...by reading her eye blinks!
`
I know that ALS is a horrible disease and the diagnosis had to have been shocking, but please don´t give up hope. She can still have a long and productive life.

It's going to be a tough fight but it looks as though you're getting the support you need. Enjoy your honeymoon, clear you head, and marshal your resources when you get back.

81. Big prayers coming to you
from both of us.

BTW, a movie about ALS, Tuesdays with Morrie, is one of my favorite movies - the book was good but I think Jack Lemmon is amazing in the movie. Morrie really shows us how to live with an illness, rather than focusing on dying from an illness (as you mentioned). It's a tear-jerker but it has a great lesson in it.

Good vibes and mighty prayers to you and yours.
