I am going Monday morning to the doctor to have a very suspicious mole looked at (and hopefully removed and biopsied). Because I have an HMO which I won't name here (but its initials are KP), I am seeing my GP (because I cannot go see a dermatologist without a referral and subsequent 6 week waitlist).

I am nervous because my family has a history of malignant melanoma (I do not believe the mole has progressed to that at this point) and I have had several blistering sunburns which put me, of fair skin, at increased risk for all types of skin cancer.

I just recently had several moles removed, one which was REALLY ugly and scary looking. I'm the same as you, very fair and have had way too many cases of sun poisoning (used to live in tx ya know). They all turned out to be just plain ol moles, even the really ugly scary one (henceforth referred to as BOUS). The biggest problem I had was BOUS was it was right in the crease of my armpit, so healing from that sucked because it was an excisional biopsy (the derm who did it was thrilled, because the scr would be totally hidden, ignoring the fact that that is the most pain in the ass place to try to heal).

Trying to get to a specialist with said HMO is darn near impossible. I never did get my neck looked at by one, and with my family history (degenerative disk disease and torticollis on my mother's side and my mother has a metal rod supporting her surgically reconstructed cervical spine) I should have been able to see one without passing go, let alone saying pretty please to my GP.

But I think his hands are tied - it took me 3 months and several escalation phone calls to get scheduled for a minor procedure that should have been done urgently. It also took 8 weeks for me to get an echocardiogram, which also should have been done quicker, but since we have accountants attempting to practice medicine, this is what you get.

I am serious. There are alternatives in southern CA, but because Kaiser is cheap, people stay with them (and get what they pay for).

Nini and I can tell you NUMEROUS ways how relatives and friends close to us have been KILLED by their gross negligence over the past 30 years.

Like the "muscle pull" in the chest that was actually undiagnosed lung cancer.

And maybe you have read in the L.A. Times about how they left hundreds of potential recipients of liver transplants to DIE because of their incomprehensible malfeasance and greed.

I hate to descend into GD-like drama here, but as soon as you are able, DROP KAISER PERMANENTE AS SOON AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.

And other than that, good luck! You will come out okay!

(I detest the notion of 'Lounge Vibes', which have proven NOT to work more often than not - I loathe superstition - but I will still wish you well on personal terms, not voodoo - otherwise the Lounge should be named "Lounge Permanente").

I want to drop them like a hot nuke immediately. As soon as my husband has a permanent job, I will be looking over the insurance plans and I will choose the plan this time (he chose the plan when we moved out here because I was not here yet.)

For my grandmother's early death at age 54. Granted, she was not in the best of health to begin with, but they probably took 10-15 years off her life. :grr: (No, the pulled muscle scenario was someone from Nini's circle of friends)
