Here's one, from my right shoulder.

The pic is out of focus, not the tat...

It's from an M.C. Escher print of angels and demons. I'm getting the demon on my left shoulder...

5. Got 5 tattoos

My first one - the kanji characters 'Ai' and 'Ki', from when I studied aikido

My third - this is year of the rabbit (top) and year of the tiger. Depending on the calendar, I am either one.

My fourth - 'ken' which means sword. I used to practice swordwork: saber, katana, broadsword, 2-handed, etc.

My second (top) is 'misu', the sign for water, and the last one is the Zodiac sign for Aquarius. Being an Aquarius and a fishery biologist, water figures prominently in my life.

14. Got one
Growling black panther head with claws on my upper left shoulder. Not meaningful, just was in New Orleans after graduating college, hung over, and thought it was a good idea. Thought about getting another but not sure what.

23. Two. But of the old fashioned, military type. Unfortunately, NOT satisfactory.
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 11:37 PM by UTUSN
One on each top arm. One being a couple of interlocked initials. The other a too small, blurred anchor with unreadable USN over it.

I don't remember getting the USN one. It might have been one of those late night deals.

But the second one was scary. There I was sitting in the waiting room, when an irate prior customer charged in to COMPLAIN loudly. He pulled up his short sleeve to show what was supposed to be a jaguar's head, but he said that it had come out looking like a weasel's head.

I'm cracking up like a loon now as I recount this, but at the time, it was, like, "Uh, I just remembered I need to be somewhere (else)!!1"

But I went through with it. It was only the interlocked letters, so how much could the dude screw it up? Still, when he showed me the drawing, I needed to get him to correct the whachamacallems, the little cross-hatches (that's not the right word) at the top of the letters -- the SERIFs!!1 It came out all right but the color-filling has totally faded out and only the outlines are left, which is all right.

Next to nobody gets to see them anyway, since I'm not a pretty picture shirtless or in tank tops or "muscle" shirts, but we're getting into TMI territory now.

25. One
On my left shoulder - a phoenix/fire bird/bird of paradise. It's getting blurry, despite my avoiding the sun and using sunscreen. I should get it touched up.

I'd rather like a dragon as well. There are a lot of gifted artists locally, so I'll probably do it eventually.

32. I have 3 (thusfar)... i want more!

The one around my neck was done in 1991 by John Rainey Jr (who did tat work for the guys in Morbid Angel, Warrant, Danzig, etc...), and consists of a chain 32 skulls, interspersed with bones. The center (down my chest) is a winged succubus and an band logo involving an inverted cross (those who've known me long enough know the band, and know the history of why it's there).

This one's also by Rainey, done in 1992, and is a reproduction of a James O'Barr painting from his comic series "The Crow". I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. O'Barr a few months after it was finished, and it became the conversation starter that led to a years-long friendship.

This is Yoshitaka Amano's "Vampire Hunter D", as reproduced from an art book. The tattooist on this one was Michael Tisdale, aka "Sheik"... an old friend who was apprenticing in Rainey's shop. I was one of his first couple of 'victims' in the chair, and this one was done as a birthday present that year.

33. I have one but it's time to either modify it or get another one
I have a profile of a butterfly located about half an inch to the right of my belly button. I was thinking about modifying it by expanding the wings and making them less rounded or changing it into a fairy.

Forgive me for what I'm about to say, but I saw the tattoo on Posh Spice of all people and I fell in love with it. I won't do the same thing because that's just too corny but I'm thinking about a modified version. Starting from the back of her neck down to (I think) between her shoulder blades, she has the Hebrew phrase "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" written down her spine. Whatever I write won't be as long and it will most likely be about my daughter. I was thinking 4 or 5 inches down my spine between my shoulder blades instead of having it go up to my neck.

34. A crescent moon on my hip because my thinking was since I was doing...
a type of primitive body modification, it only made sense to use a very primitive symbol.

I don't understand the thinking behind tattoos consisting of pop culture images, but that's just me.
