NETFLIX
I have been thinking about joining "netflix."

Any DU'ers belong to this service? How long have you been a member? Do you like it? Are there any hidden costs?

1. I don't use it
Because I don't watch enough movies, but my co-worker raves about it. Let me know what you think. They have a free trial, I think.

2. No hidden costs - if you watch many movies - it's well
worth it. My son bought me an initial membership for last MD - I am about to cancel because I just am not home enough any more.

3. I use Netflix -
and I love it!

The post office has lost a couple movies, and I reported the problem to Netflix - and they were very understanding and took them off my list.

4. I used it a few years ago
for about 18 months. I liked it a lot. Now I am remarried and my costs weren't proportionate to what I watched. I had nothing but good luck with it.

5. try dvdovernight.com
they are cheaper since they don't offer an unlimited subscription service, and if you only rent a few movies a month, it's a better deal.

24. I don't know about that
money-wise, but Netflix does do a non-unlimited level of service that's a little cheaper than their normal service as well.

FWIW, I love Netflix. We also live in a small town with an unsatisfactory video store, and this was a godsend. We've been using it as well to remember what movies we wanted to see... for example, if Mrs. Robb or I see an ad for a movie we know (a) will never come to our little town, or (b) we're never going to get it together to see in the theater, we just tell Netflix at that moment to save it for us.

Works out great!

7. It's a very good service
At least it was when I used it a couple years ago. It wasn't quite worth it to me after I got a Tivo and could record a lot of movies on TCM. I've been thinking about signing up again, though.

Their turnaround is very fast. You could easily watch a different movie every night if you drop your returns in the mail right away.

8. I love it :)
Makes it very easy, and they also have a great selection of some of the more eclectic stuff (odd independent movies and such).

9. I have it
I loathe Blockbuster and always am late with returns. They also habitually never have the movie I am hankering to see and I have to wander around for an hour trying to find something else in stock.

If you rent a movie a week at Blockbuster it comes to about 18.00 bucks a month, after taxes, lots more if you are 15 seconds or more late. At Netflix you set up a queue of movies you want to see and they automatically send the next one(s) after a return. They have always had the ones I wanted. I think it is a really good service. You can make it even better by finding another person to share it with you.

10. Great Service
Only a couple of minor problems in over two years. If you keep movies for a long time then the cost per rental is higher. I watch three to four movies a week and I love not worrying about late return fees.

11. Netfix has a distribution warehouse within 100 miles of me...
I get the shipping notice via email and receive the movie the next day. When I get them, I copy it and send the DVD right back the next day. That way, I can watch them at my leisure and get to keep a copy of it. I think that's legal, right? ;)

20. You have to have a DVD+R or RW burner...
...and software like DVD XCopy (gold or platinum). You can copy any DVD with it.

12. Is there one that lets you have more at one time?

I haven't seen a Home Film Festival-friendly service.

If that is your preferred style of movie viewing, you are stuck with Blockbuster.

14. NetFlix
lets you have 3 at a time. Actually, they have a tiered system. The basic 20 dollar a month service is 3 titles out at a time. You can go as high as 8 out at a time for, I think, 35 or 40 dollars a month. I'd go for that if I was in a rural area with delayed mail and had kids or something, where multiple people were watching different titles.

And as long as you don't mind waiting a day or two for your flick, you'll like it.

19. I joined Blocksuckers
They are a block away from my house and my lazy ass was too damn lazy to walk the DVD back up to the store and return it and I paid them more in fees then what the DVD would have cost me at Walmart which I don't shop at of course.

21. It's great. I love it.
I've had it since last April. And I have no complaints. Since I live in Georgia and they are in Norcross, not too far from me, I get a 24-hour turnaround. As soon as you send them back a DVD, they send you another one. There are no hidden charges. My service is $21.95 a month because I have to pay GA sales tax. But I would recommend joining if you watch a lot of movies. I usually get about 3 DVDs a week.

22. No Blockbuster censorship
In many areas Blockbuster is the only choice. Outside of the mainstream they have a poor selection and many versions are "edited" for Blockbuster.

23. I just joined back up with them
recently. I was with them a year or so ago, but movies started disappearing in the mail (a total of about 8) and I was getting blamed for it. So I cancelled. I joined back up a couple weeks ago, and things seem to be going better this time around. New mail carrier, perhaps...

25. I used the Service and was Pleased
I stopped because we just don't watch very many movies. The one time I got a bad disk from them, they were VERY cooperative. This is a good organization.

26. It's probably great if you watch movies frequently.
I was on the plan for 3 DVDs at a time for $21.99 per month. It's ultra-convenient; they come in the mail very quickly, and have a pre-paid return envelope. No hidden costs, no late fees, etc. It's a great deal if you watch movies frequently -- especially if you hate having one more errand to run: going to the video store.

I canceled it a few days ago because we don't watch movies frequently enough. But, needing to have a way to feed my film addiction, I added a movie package to our dish network. Saved $10/mo. over Netflix.
