I watched it last night on DVD. I have never read the novel. I liked this film. The story was unique. The cinematography was breathtaking. There was a bit of a lame bit towards the end. All in all, I dug it.
The critics pretty much hated it. Fans of the novel seem to agree with the critics. Anyone else seen it? If so, what did you think of Perfume?

1. I saw the DVD in the store |

the other night. I'm unsure about seeing it since I'm such a huge fan of the book. Although I think I like most of the actors in it.
The book is a modern masterpiece, even in translation to English from the original German.

I never even heard of the book until I saw a trailer for the movie. Being an amateur perfumer, I was intrigued.
TO ADD: In the featurette that comes with the DVD, the makers mention that they grounded the story in a realistic setting and that might be why fans of the novel don't like the film.

And I read the book many, many years ago, so there was very little impression to contrast the two. I liked it it. But then I like Tom Tykwer's films. Great photography and the evocation of Paris in the 18th century.

He made all that filth and disease look beautiful. How the hell did he do that? It was the most gorgeous depravity I've ever seen!

7. Always the risk of translating a novel to film |
|
As I said, I haven't read the novel but I intend to. I tend to shy from fiction because I become invested in the characters and plot. Many is the time I've stopped reading a fiction novel because I hated the characters or the tale. My greatest disappointment was "Catcher in the Rye". I hated Holden Caulfield. I thought he was a mean little asshole and he didn't learn a goddamned thing. I finished and thought: "This is it? This is the greatest teenage angst story of the twentieth century? Fuck that! I'll go back to reading Paul Zindel books!"
