For the Baseball minds - a question |
|
What the hell is the difference between a pop-out and a fly-out?

1. I think they're basically the same... |
|
we always called them pop-outs. They go straight up into the air. Don't quote me, though. :)

2. i haven't watched baseball for many years |

but is a pop-out infield and a fly-out outfield? that would be my best guess

3. That is kind of what I thought with the added "foul-out" being a pop fly caught in foul territory |
|
but I always wondered why the distinction.

In my head, it's who catches it — infielder, pop-out; outfielder, fly-out. Doesn't matter where it's caught.

6. Well, it's not a thing to 'know' |
|
That's just how I see it. It's not written down anywhere.

7. I think there is some sort of intuitive mathematical relationship between |
|
the height the ball reaches and the distance it travels. I.e., if the ball goes much higher than it goes long, it's a pop-out. If it goes much longer than it goes high, it's a line-out. Somewhere in between is a fly-out.
