8. "My Darling Clementine" was on PBS tonight
and I was amazed how good it was. Not necessarily accurate in terms of history, but extremely well-done and the acting was superb (espeically Henry Fonda and Victor Mature).

2. I haven't seen them all, but I'm going with Fort Apache
It's a relevant story for today, and I think the dissection of military myth-making as well as its treatment of the Indians was pretty impressive for 1948. (Also, I have a serious crush on the 20 year-old Shirley Temple...)

How does a person pick one out of all that?
I liked 'Grapes of Wrath' (my mother despises that flick), Mr. Roberts, and Quiet Man.

4. I had to go with "Grapes of Wrath"...
...Henry Fonda as the young Tom Joad, striding off to confront the injustice of America in the '30's, was a powerful scene.

Plus, I was taking a college History course on America during the period between WWI & WWII when I first saw it; it was a very interesting insight into the strong Socialist appeal of the times.

:D

5. I'd say "The Searchers" but there are so many good ones to choose from
John Wayne was at his best when he worked with Ford or Howard Hawks. When he didn't have a strong director many times Wayne resorted to his usual tricks. The exceptions being his final film for director Don Siegel, THE SHOOTIST, and his film for Mark Rydell, THE COWBOYS.

6. The Searchers....
It's Waynes best movie...

It is all about America coming together after the Civil War and how there will be plenty of men we depended on to show us the way who don't belong in the new country...

That last scene when everyone goes into the house, even the recaptured of Appache hostage Natalie Wood is allowed to re-enter but Wayne is shut out...

It's sad, real sad...

9. I picked "Grapes of Wrath" but
I may be giving it an unfair edge because I loved the book so much.

11. I must choose the Grapes of Wrath.
Although I liked the the Quiet Man a great deal. But Grapes is my second favorite of all-time, right behind To Kill A Mockingbird.

14. Orson Welles was once asked to name the three best American directors and he replied,
"Oh that's easy. John Ford, John Ford and John Ford."
