So why isn't Bert Blyleven in the Hall of Fame... |
|
I mean Robin Roberts is in the Hall with almost as good stats...
The guy ranks 5th all time in Strike outs...
Tossed 60 shutouts...
But he ONLY won 287 games...
Remember, he played with the Indians there in the early 80's and he had a winning record...
That should count for an automatic induction
And don't get me started on Ripken...
He was good, but not Hall of fame great...
I mean he had over 3100 hits and still had an average of .276...
Lot's of at bats...
Sure, we should have given him the guy with perfect attendance...
But if Bert isn't in, there is no way Cal gets in...

7. When Bert pitched for the Indians, I saw him about ten times.... |
|
He is my favorite all time favorite Indians pitcher...
And we have had some good ones over the years, Eckersly, Gaylord Perry, Sam McDowell, CC, Dick Bossman...
That curve would start at someones head and break down and away about three feet in front of the plate...
It was absolutely awesome...

Blyleven has *much* better numbers than *many* Hall of Famers. There is no precedent for keeping someone with his credentials out...

4. A ton of great pitchers retired in the 80s. And they have never |
|
been adequately replaced IMO. Bert wasn't one of the VERY best pitchers of his era, but he is head and shoulders above most everybody since.
I would vote for him because of his numbers. Not many guys have come close since. Plus he had the best nickname ever- Bert 'Be Home' Blyleven.

5. i think the baseball and football HoF should ease up a bit and let more guys in |
|
like with blyleven, threshold seem to be 300 wins. but what if a guy was dominant, gets 200 wins, then gets hurt or something. or terrel davis who may not get in even tho he was fantastic for a few years before blowing out a knee.
i got problems with sportwriters being the gatekeepers of HoFs.

10. The voters are kinda stupid |
|
The baseball writers who do the voting give a lot of weight to 'big years'. The 20 win seasons. There are plenty in the hall that suck and couldnt carry Berts jockstrap. Same goes for El Tiant and Jim Kaat. Cal gets in because he was a selfish player that refused to let his team field a REAL shortstop. You know, the kind with some range. So he hung around and got those longevity numbers that hack sportswriters look at while he dutifully grounded into his customary 25 to 30 double-plays a year, year after year, long after he should have move to third base. Funny, A-Rod is treated like the worlds biggest bastard by skYankee fans but he moved to third base even though he has always had a better glove at shortstop than Derek Jeter.

at the ball...
I forgot about Louie Tiant when he pitched for the tribe...
One year he had like a 1.35 ERA...
