got to see the Smithereens last night
they were great! I had never seen them and it was fun to see young and older folk yelling out all the words, slow dancing, holding a beer cup up for the excellent guitar player while he jammed in the street - it was at an outdoor beer fest type thing...

Those guys can sure play and they have great hooks!

6. I was too cool to like them back in my punk days
(why I have no idea) I seem to remember meeting some guy who said he was their drummer back in the day, and being unimpressed. Boy was that dumb. I just assumed that he was lying.... THe guitar player is great to watch.

they were a lot of fun. Pat had a great grin and didn't seem as brooding as I expected.

I don't know if it was a tour. They didn't seem to be pushing any new material.

on edit, the Beatles covers CD just came out - that must be what they are touring...

3. I once saw Pat Denizio do the most rock and roll road animal thing...
I have ever seen in my life.
The Smithereens were playing the local rock club about 20 years ago. I walk into the men's room. Now, this men's room contained a sink, two urinals, and a toilet. No partitions, nothing. No one EVER used the toilet for anything but urination or as a place to flip cigarette butts. Well...I walk in and Denizio is sitting on the toilet and I assume defecating. The whole time other people are coming in and out of the restroom. At that moment, I knew that he was indeed a rock and roll animal if he could sit there and do that while a stream of people came passing through the room. THIS was a man who was TOTALLY comfortable in the rock club environment.

They were great that night.

9. Good ole Pat.
Actually what you describe, reminds of the animal dorm room bathroom I lived in for a year in Stephen F. Austin Univ. in Nacogdoches, Texas. That was a year I will never forget although parts of it are blurry.

4. I love them
Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 06:11 PM by MysticalChicken
The first time I heard them was actually in the movie Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. When Heather Mooney's first scene came up, "Blood and Roses" started playing, and I was like "Wow, that's a great song." Now every time I hear that song I picture that scene in my head...

10. It was fun to hear that and "house that we used to live in" -
great rave-ups.

They also did stuff from their album of Beatle covers - I must have missed that one.

and "Behind Blue Eyes" for an encore - obviously a lot of Who influence, which I had somehow missed before til I saw all the Townsend -type windmilling from the guitar player. It was cool.

5. One of my late 80's favorites.
"Kiss Your Tears Away" is one of my all time favorite songs. If they're ever in New England, I'd love to see them (and before I posted, I had to google- Milford (CT) Oyster Festival Aug. 18th.) :bounce:

12. I was so surprised they were playing at such a small venue
I would have thought that they would be playing one of our local outdoor festivals. But it was fun to stand up front and watch all the actions. Most of the 20 something beer drinking crowd were bored to death - it was more of we "older" folk who were transfixed.

it's still odd to see bands from back when, who now look like all the dads my age.... oh how I loved how brooding they looked 20 years ago! ;)

11. There's an exterminating company in Chicago called Smithereens....
OT, I know, but I always found it a hilarious name for an exterminator. Lord knows, if I ever need their kind of services, I will call them.

Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 08:17 PM by tigereye
as if they had been blown to smithereens. I couldn't find a pic of it to post though.

the name makes sense for an exterminating co, though.

:hi: GAOT!
