I had a visit from royalty!
I was sitting on the couch, and my husband opened the sliding glass door to put the trash out back.

I looked out past him to see the overgrown mess that I've let go back there.

I caught a fluttering glimpse of color before my husband closed the curtain.

I grabbed my camera and went outside. I stood back and waited for the moment it would land.

It's a bit breezy today, so the monarch just fluttered and floated around me.

Finally, it came to a rest right in front of me like it knew it was being photographed.

So, here is a picture of my royal visitor.

I tried to get a shot with it's wings open, but they all came out too blurry.

My husband said that even if I didn't get the greatest open wing shot, it was worth it to watch the butterfly "dance" around me.

I even felt like that, too, when I was standing there. :bounce:

10. I am still trying to get some milkweed
to help propagate the Monarchs. Maybe over my vacation, since I guess I have to goto Lawrence to get some. The last batch I got, people tell me now, is only Butterfly weed.

11. I didn't plant anything this year in the back.
We thought we were going to be gone for the summer, and didn't want to have someone else be responsible for it.

I guess it liked whatever I let grow wild back there.

13. they feed on pollen, so any flower will probably due
but they need milkweed for reproduction, and they are dying off because milkweed is increasingly being killed by chemical farming.

18. I feel your pain
I have taken many butterfly pictures for a certain friend of mine and getting one with the wings open is a bitch.

this was the best open wing one i got so far and it is off center.
You did a wonderful Job great picture :)
Some pretty bugs just don't like to cooperate.

19. Very nice job.
Off center makes it "artistic". ;)

They just open their wings so fast you have to anticipate the act to catch it just right.

21. I haven't gotten any good ones lately
And thank you :)
I think some of it has to do with different species of butterfly some cooperate quite well while others are assholes :)

22. They better watch out for me.
I'm married to an entomologist with butterfly nets and pinning boards, and I know how to use them both!

I would never have gotten the picture if I hadn't caught the flutter out of the corner of my eye.

There is a butterfly house a few miles from my dad's house. I need to go there on my next visit and see if I can get something good. :)

23. It was really cool.
A few times I thought it was going to land on me. I kept screaming, "NOOOOOOOO!!! Don't land on me!!" in my head.

I wouldn't have been able to get a picture that way.
