1. I'd be worried if my cat wasn't biting me
Biting is his favorite activity. Right now, however, he's sitting on my knee like a gargoyle, staring death-looks at me. I don't have a clue what he wants, unless it's Third Dinner.

He's creeping me out. :scared:

9. I adopted a kitty once who bit me all the time
It was so weird--I've had cats my whole life and this is the first one who bit. Someone told me it happens if they are taken away from their mama too early. Also, I've read that the longer they stay with Mama the friendlier they are, and they learn better grooming habits.

Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 02:17 AM by badgerpup
Seriously, how long has she been doing this?
Has anything happened that may have triggered a behavioral change...new addition to family, illness, moving, painting, redecorating?

The damnedest things can set the little guys off, and they're kinda limited in how they're able to express the finer points of how they feel, poor little kitters....

14. Some cats are biters, some aren't
I have been around a cat that just had to CHOMP on you when you're petting it, although he purred and acted like he was attention-starved. It belonged to my mom and she just put up with it but someone else may have just gotten rid of a cat like that. Another friend has a cat who seems to want affection but can't seem to stand to be touched, and will go "Wow-RRR!" and chomp on your or try to scratch you if you try to pet her.

Like others said here, it depends on why the cat is biting. It could be a nutritional deficiency problem and an addition of a different kind of food could help, or cat vitamins, or it may have hot spots you don't know about.

My cat will, not too frequently, bite my arm when I pet him but he does it very gently and doesn't bite down hard. It seems to be clearly just a sign of affection from him, and maybe your cat is that way but needs to be taught the difference between a 'love bite' and a hard bite.

15. One of mine bites occasionally.
She's kind of a loon. Usually I can tell when she's getting in a bitey mood and get away.
She's a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type, one minute very sweet and the next she's evil.

She was abandoned before weaning, we raised her with a bottle - and this is the thanks we get! :eyes:

She is very loving most of the time, tho...so it's worth it. :)

Maybe yours was booted out the nest too young as well...

19. Mine has similar behavior, but wasn't taken from momma cat too early
In fact, it was the biting that made me end up with her. There was another cat in the litter I really wanted, but this one just kept grabbing me and hanging on for dear life.

Been around cats enough to know often THEY pick YOU, so I took the little beastie home. She seemed most pleased to get here. She is three now and knows the meaning of: NO BITE. She will nip and make like she will bite, but just hold some part of your biped meat in her teeth to let you know she could have killed you if she wanted to. Then she purrs.

She is over kitten crazies but still plenty interesting, always inventing new games for Havocdad to play with her when she wants to rumble. She has replaced biting with Kung Fu tricks. :eyes: I have paw prints well up all the door frames.

21. one of mine has started that
she just bit me again, actually about 5 minutes before I read this post. And it is very, very uncharacteristic of her. She has lost a ton of weight and is very thin. I took her to the vet and may and they ran bloodwork, the dr. said she was perfectly healthy. Well, I could tell she was still losing weight and I took her back last week and she'd gone down another half a pound...he did a urinalysis this time and said that was fine. And now all of a sudden in the last couple of weeks she starts with the biting. Sigh...it's frustrating right now because she isn't showing any pathology at all, but she's thin as all get out. I've spent over $200 bucks just to be told she's "fine". I KNOW this biting has something to do with whatever is wrong...she is the sweetest cat and it's so out of character for her.

25. hmmm
I think he did the first time but when she goes back next month I will have him look. It's odd that having a sore mouth would make one bite...it seems like it would make one not want to bite. Thanks for the thought though I'll have him check her when I go. :hi:

26. While a bite might help, a smart cat will find a way to get a message across
I tend to wonder what they are communicating when there is a new behavior. Since this new behavior came along with a weight loss, it really needs to be considered.
