... was grand marshal at a Pride parade a while back. And that was in Alberta, which has a reputation for being more right-wing than other provinces.
At the Pride festivities in Victoria, B.C. this month, I saw the leader of the provincial opposition (Carole James), several federal MPs, and surprise visitor Jack Layton (federal NDP leader) on foot, carrying a rainbow flag. Also numerous people from city council and the school board.
Most Canadians accept this as completely normal ... and same-sex marriage is a non-issue in most provinces. At the hospital, I was in line behind a woman who was filling out the admission paperwork on behalf of her spouse, who has Alzheimer's. The staff, and the patients in the vicinity, didn't so much as raise an eyebrow.
Our country sure isn't perfect, but it's nice that we've done something right.
