In memory of the late Ingmar Bergman: If you had to challenge death to a game what would that be?
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 12:38 PM by LynneSin
My favorite Bergmann movie is "The Seventh Seal" where Max Von Sydow has to play chess with the grim reaper in order to save his soul.

So if you had to challenge death to a game in order to save your soul - what game would you choose?

3. Major league baseball
Even a short game takes five hundred years to play, so I could probably rack up a few extra millennia of life before the 7th inning stretch.

Of course, an eternity of baseball is IMO largely indistinguishable from the worst of Hells, so it might not be a real victory for me.

They were playing Battleship. It think they also played Clue and maybe Connect Four, perhaps some other games.

Correction: No Connect Four, it was Twister and NFL Super Bowl Electric Football.

43. two person risk seems like a waste of time
of course, my brother and I never followed the rules when we played it. Which was typical of all the games we played. We'd play half a dozen games and then play one with dad. He'd say 'what happens when this happens'. and we'd say 'you do this'. Dad would say 'that can't be right, let me see the rule book'.

60. my brother cheats though
he's the frigging dice man. In "Can't stop", for example, he can get halfway up the board with only two of three pilons placed. One time in Risk he rolled double ones on defense. I thought I had won two armies. Then I rolled triple ones on my roll. What are the odds of that? Once we were playing triple Yahtzee. We had three turns left and we both needed two yahtzees. He gets both of them. I get none. I think I got four of a kind on my first turn and then failed on the next two rolls. So I went out the front door and threw the dice into my neighbor's yard. My siblings claim I have a temper, but I think Jesus would have done the same thing. That dice had it coming. There's only so much a person can take. We never found the dice that day. I think it got caught in a tree, but later my neighbor brought it to us after his lawnmower had chewed it up.

47. it depends if death has a FIDE rating
If death is not over 1800 in chess rating, I could probably beat him in chess. Otherwise I might take my chances in stratego. I still think the ultimate game is the one with 69 rings and 3 pegs. The rings are stacked from largest to smallest and must be moved from one peg to another, without ever putting a larger ring over a smaller ring. Thing is, it takes several trillion moves to finish that 'game'. Actually, to be precise, it takes 590,295,810,358,705,651,711 moves. There's no way to win it, but you could hope that death would get bored after about five years of playing and just concede. This was the 'game' picked in a short story where some alien culture had a tradition that a condemned person got to pick a 'last game'.
