This past weekend I saw one of the coolest things I've ever seen... |
|
I don't usually post in The Lounge, but since my last rafting post was moved here, I figured I'd start here;
As I posted last week, my wife and I went white water rafting in Maine this weekend, on the Dead River, the longest stretch of continuous whitewater in the New England area. 16 miles of mostly class III with lots of class II and a bit of class IV thrown in. It would have been the coolest thing ever without the coolest I'm referencing in my subject line...
Barely fifteen minutes after we launched, before we hit the first rapids, a bald eagle swooped down, skimmed along the water and scooped up a big fish! He cruised a bit farther down river and landed on a low-hanging birch limb hanging out over the water. We maneuvered the raft to that side of the river and cruised underneath. We got right up to him, almost underneath the tree limb. He was sitting there chomping on his fish. It was sooooo freakin' cool! He took off when we got underneath, cruised down the river and looped back after we passed his preferred spot, all the while staying within site between the banks of the river.
LET THE EAGLE SOOOOOAAARRR! It was almost literally breath-taking. "Majestic" certainly comes to mind.
I'd never been deep into Maine, despite my years living in New England. It is an amazing place...nothing but forest and water as far as the eye can see. Beautiful, beautiful country, and well worth the 7-hour drive from the Hartford area. We're already planning the next trip!
