I preheated the oven one night, and when it was to temp, I put on my little oven mit to pull out the rack.

Instead, I opened the door with the mitted hand and pulled out the rack with my bare hand.

I quickly got my hand into an ice bath, and it was fine a few hours later.

I swear by soaking burned body parts in ice water. I have never gotten a blister with that method, and the burn has always been very mild.

I hope you heal quickly.

Years ago I was working in a research lab and we had to soak our glass pipettes in a killer mixture of sulfuric, nitric and some other killer acid. The stuff was thick it was potent. After one hour you lifted up a basket and would begin a rinse process with water. So I go in and lift the basket up and the bottom falls out with the pipettes going everywhere so I immediately reach down with my bare hand and grab the bottom of the basket. I was burned, but lucky I got it right under water.

It was one of those, what the hell was I doing moments.

When I was baking in junior high, I used pot holders to take something out of the oven, but didn't have things positioned right and ended up getting a blistering burn on the side of my thumb.

We were seeding winter wheat. Back then, we'd buy the seed in large paper sacks and pour the seed into the seed drill by hand. These days the process is more automated and the seed is purchased in bulk.

This is a seed drill:


We would drive this solid iron rod into the ground and impale the paper bags upon it. Then set it on fire to dispose of the paper.

So when school is over for the day I walk out to the field to relieve my father who has been seeding all day. I see the rod laying on the ground in the hot September sun. There's no ash, it's just laying there (a gust of wind must have blown the ash away).

So I pick it up. I expected it to be hot from the sun so I ignored my reflexes. I get it about halfway up to the flatbed when I realize that it's burning the ever loving crap out of my hand.

Wound up with second and third degree burns which was even more painful because of all the nerve endings we have on our hands.

It was unpleasant.
