Poll question: Who's dystopic future are we living in, at present?
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 06:43 PM by Writer
Aldous Huxley's or George Orwell's?

Or both?

And why?

5. Yes. A dystopian hell of twisted intentions and...
...mangled lives, presided over by a goat with a crown.

That or a combination of Huxley, Orwell and Joseph Heller.

4. Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil'
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/

(hey - I just noticed Tom Stoppard was a co-writer. Well , that explains the quality even more).

Admittedly, he didn't have to look so far ahead. But he has the combination of propaganda, torture, consumerism and madness down just right.

11. You should check out his wikiquote page
He's not the ubercapitalist people think he is. As his writings reveal, he wasn't under the illusion that big business is always benign and a force for good.

18. the current model of capitalism we are subjected to is straight up usury
making money from money and creating nothing of actual value in the process.

we call speculators "investors" and it is supposed to lend credence to the whole sham.

i think adam smith (and it's been years since i read wealth of nations) proposed a market whereby the issue of markets would have ostensible tangible results for the greatest number of people. as opposed to the generation of money, which is inherently different than wealth. money, of itself, is practically meaningless.

i might be mistaken though.

22. We're living in the logical exponentiation of capitalism.
Greed made manifest. With Carlyle bidding for Virgin's phone network, George Bush would be able to listen to your phone calls anytime he wants.

A teacher once said that we are seeing the struggle between those who want to run the world, and those who want to merely live in it.
