I flunked a medical test this morning. |
|
The MRI
Couldn't stay in for more than a second. I am desperatly claustrophobic. I've had the most horrendous operations awake under local anesthesia. But I can't stand being in that machine!

1. can't they give you a sedative for that? |
|
And now, there are newer, open MRI's.
There's a solution for you somewhere.

2. My doctor wanted me to have a closed one |

and he's not at this hospital. The tech was in a huge hurry and I was 15 min late so she kicked me out. Last time I had valium IV, she didn't want to be bothered with it.

5. What a sad, pathetic asshole that tech is. |

She's a stain upon her profession.
And I'd be ripping that department and my doctor a new one for allowing me to be abused in that manner.

I was supposed to be there 15 min early but I was actually right on time. I had a xanax with me but I didn't want to take it before driving. The guy ahead of me was early so I could have, taken the pill and waited although it still might not have worked.
I will choose a different hosp next time. My doc is 160 miles away.

3. I had a tough time tolerating mine too, even with a big dose of Valium |

Seriously--it feels like you're jammed into a teeny space, and there's no WAY you could get out of it by yourself because your arms are pinned to your sides, which is fucking scary.

4. I had one 20 years ago |

but I was smaller then. Still I hated it. I don't even think I could do it with valium either. Its got to be the ultimate experience of being engulfed by technology.
The brochure said they had headphones with music but when I got there, they didn't.
I had my nose done under a local anestethic- 65 min of surgery, no valium. I just pretended I was the resident.
But this- I get panicky immediately. I think I would have to be unconscious. Seriously.

I got a prescription from the dr. before the MRI. I had to take the pill a half hour before my appt. and had to have someone drive me there and take me home, but it worked wonders and I didn't have any problems. It sure took the edge off. You need to ask your dr. for something beforehand.
Edit - whatever it was, it wasn't valium. Can't remember the name....if I still have the container around, I'll let you know the name of the pill.

see if you have that option
lots of people have claustrophobia and meds can reduce anxiety if you don't have that option.

I can't remember what. He said closed was better. But closed and unconscious is best.

14. The same thing happened to me several years ago. |
|
I am probably the most claustrophobic person in the world. The only machine available was the closed one, and I had to be shoved all the way in. I panicked and had to be taken out. The next day they loaded me up with valium and the head tech, who happened to be working that day, stayed in the room and held my feet the whole time (sounds silly but it helped a lot to have him there). I will be grateful to him for the rest of my life.
