1. I did a painting of him once. It's now in the home of people I really like a lot.

He's the last Republican I ever voted for. I was 12, and my sixth grade class was having a mock presidential election.

My obsession with Watergate began when I was in the seventh grade.

9. He was bad
Although not as bad as Shrubya, I remember he had his days.

Just off the top of my head, he attacked Cambodia, causing it to destabilize, which brought about the rise of the Khmer Rouge. He extended the Vietnam war longer than necessary. He overthrew the democratically elected Chilean government. A list of crimes associated with Watergate include, burglary, illegal wiretapping, extortion, obstruction of justice and destruction of evidence. Remember he was vice-president when the Shah of Iran was installed. So he, in part, was responsible for today's problem with Middle East Islamic fundamentalism. He dumped the gold standard to pay for his part of the Vietnam war, which almost destroyed the economy years later. He opposed nationalized health care, he was vindictive, petty and paranoid.

Nixon was no saint.

Pining for the "go old days" doesn't fly with me.

12. Still better than Bush.
I'm not pining for Nixon. I'd rather have a dead donkey in the white house.
But it's just funny to think...how someone could actually make Nixon look good.

10. I don't think Nixon gave a whit about the environment
He only create the EPA because he was shamed into it, that the environment in America was so bad at the time.

At least he had shame

17. Not just the EPA
The National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act... virtually every major piece of environmental legislation on the national level.

20. I wouldn't put it pass Nixon to have signed all that legislation
Because the were plenty of votes of override any vetoes.

Again he had no choice. I have a hard time to think that he did a good thing for any of the right reasons.

15. That the thing about him
He only did good things because he was backed into a corner.

Amazing we have a president today who can't even do that.

19. it's the difference between being a typical Republican prick
from the old days, and being a completely insane Right-Wing maniac of the virulent strain we are currently being tormented by.

14. I was in my late teens during the Watergate years, and I can't find much
to appreciate about him.

Though I will say, I didn't think it possible to have a President worse than Nixon. Boy, I was ever proved wrong.

16. Tom Wicker said Nixon was one of us...
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 11:05 PM by two gun sid
and to use the words of Hunter S. Thompson, Wicker was saying that, "...we are really just a nation of...used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable."

Yep, Nixon was one of us.
