1. Love him
if only for "Duel" and the "USS Indianapolis" scene in Jaws, which is one of the 5 all-time greatest scenes in film:

4. Love him
A great movie director and I also loved his "Amazing Stories" series. I've heard him interviewed and I think highly of him as a person in many ways. Sure, he's had some flops but they don't cancel out his successes

5. Hate is way too strong
I think his movies are mostly crap, but that is just my opinion. Hate him, no. Hate most of his movies, yes.

6. He has always been the best.
The only Director that works in hope. All the others love destruction. Scorsese loves working in the underbelly of mankind. He spends his time kicking over rocks to find the crap that exists under. Steven has gone so far past that.

10. That's because Speilberg is just a Romper Room Rousseauian...
and Scorsese is an artistic Hobbesian.
Scorsese knows the actual nature of the human animal while Speilberg sells fantasies

12. How are "Schindler's List" or the Shoah Foundation fantasies?

16. I was also somewhat darkly amused by the underlying message...
of "Schindler's List"
Osckar Schindler is involved in a very evil enterprise...but he behaves viruously...but still profits financially from his participation in the very evil enterprise...but that's all right because he behaved virtuously!
There's no wonder that the Hollywood establishment applauded the "courage" of "Schindler's List" No surprise there at all.

And really, just how risky is it to declare that the nazis and the holocaust were bad things?
You're really going out on a limb there, Stevie...

17. It's a holocaust movie with a happy ending.
It seemed to me to be a rather romanticized version of the holocaust. "Fantasy" seems to be apt, even if it's a true story.

14. I think they each have a well-earned place in cinema.
I much prefer Scorsese's work, but I have a great deal of respect for Spielberg's work, as well.

:hi: hickman! How ya been?

8. how could I hate a major architect of my childhood
Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, E.T., Poltergeist, The Goonies. My happy Innocent times of the 70's and 80's would not have had the magical escapism without his summer popcorn fun.

and when I grew up he was there with Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, A.I. and still got taken back to the fantasy world with Jurassic Park. He know his craft well.

9. Speilberg has grown as a filmmaker
I loved the films he made in the 70's and 80's. His Tom Cruise films were just awful and I didn't like or get A.I. It was Munich that made me realize this man was a great filmmaker who could do a fun popcorn movie and a intense drama.I think we will see the "old Vintage" Spielberg with Indy 4. I cannot wait.

11. Loved his early career.
He's one of those artists that did all his good work in his youth. He's been phoning it in for years.

Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 02:29 PM by MiserableFailure
then obviously...

i didn't realize people didn't know that about spielberg. he's very politically active and outspoken and has always supported Democratic causes.

Look at this from Newsmeat:

Steven Spielberg , 60 (bio)
filmmaker

$4,000 Republican
$825,873* Democrat
$53,150 special interest
total: $883,023

He's only given $4,000 to Republicans in his life, and $3000 of that was to Arlen Specter. He gives more to Democrats than Republicans by a more than 200 to 1 ratio.

He also likes to give to a bunch of competing candidates at once:

SELF-EMPLOYED/PRODUCER RICHARDSON, BILL (D)
President
RICHARDSON FOR PRESIDENT INC. $2,300
