Sports Trading cards - who here is an active collector these days?
I'm looking for a little heads up on what the current trading card market is like.

Specifically I'm interested in the Hockey Card market but I guessing anyone collecting baseball or other sports would have a good general idea.

My STBE Wife and I used to be avid collectors from the late 70s to the mid 90s and we've have a respectable combined collection but it's been 10 or 15 years since either of us have so much as looked at a Becket or been to a show.

Now that we're splitting up we're trying to decide what the best plan of action is for the collection, it would be difficult to pick out what was her's or mine before we were married and who paid for what afterwards. We're thinking we pick out a few special cards to hold basically to hand down to our son to do with as he pleases once he's older and sell the rest of the collection and also give him (put in savings or if it isn't that much buy something for him now that he could use).

I'm just wondering is that the best plan or should we hold onto it all for now. I know what we need to do is to pick up a Becket and maybe go to a shop or show but I thought I'd see if I can get a little heads up now.

1. I'd hang on to them
You have much the same collection I have. Mine's 95% baseball, 5% asstd other stuff. Remember, there's a TON of stuff out there from 78 through the 90's, which has kept the big 3 of the time (Topps, Donruss and Fleer w/early Upper Deck being a little more rare) lesser in advancing value. I'd keep it all with the intent of giving it all to my son in time. I think that in another decade or so, some of the folks in those years will increase some of the demand.

Most of the value in my collection comes from older, individual cards I bought because I liked the players (Nolan Ryan, Yaz, etc).

I'd pick up a recent Beckett, just to see where they are if you haven't checked in a while.
