What passes for humor in Rapture Ready land.
Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 11:49 AM by Deep13
Here is a video someone posted on the Rapture Ready Forum. It's like those practical joke TV shows that used to be on before networks found out that amateur tapes were more plentiful and more funny.

I don't have sound here, but I got the jist of it. After a long-winded introduction, a girl is tricked into thinking that the Rapture(tm) occured and that she was "left behind" and going to hell. The reaction from the crowd was a mixture of outrage over the cruelty of the joke and humor. I found the cruelty appauling but not as appauling as the idea that anyone could buy into a fantasy to the extent that this kind of joke is not immediately believeable. My thought might be, "What a bunch of assholes. I guess if they are in heaven, they won't mind me searching their clothes for cash and jewelry. Hey, these shoes are my size."

One remark I found especially telling was this.

post 19: "My question is: Is this girl saved? If she wasn't saved at the time this might be the push that saves her."

Fundies think absolutely anything is justified to convert pople. If they were right, logically anything would be justified. That includes scaring the shit out of children at so-called hell houses, harassment, controlling education, coercion and outright lies. After all, what is unethical if it involves saving ones immortal soul from an eternity of torment?

1. Yikes
I don't know what's more bizarre, the fact that they actually set up a "prank" like that or that the girl was freaking out because she thought everyone evaporated to the heavens.

That was almost surreal.

3. Never saw that before
That is messed up. I sort of feel sorry for them because it seems that they just spend their lives worrying about that the day is soon when they will all fly up to the sky.

Typically, I don't care what people believe in or not, but when it seems like they are on the verge of hurting people then I am a bit more vocal.

Cloth seats will burn and vinyl will melt.

6. I always wanted to try a prank like that
Pick out a Mega-church on Sunday morning, and during the service set up some abandoned cars and sets of clothing. When the service lets out, have a couple people say "wow, did you see that? A couple beams of light and some people were suddenly missing. I guess the rapture happened. What? No one from inside the chuch made it? I guess you must be going to the wrong church."

12. I found this remark a bit ironic.
post 23:
"and when the host said 'the problem is some people take it literally'
yeah people take it literally because it's true moron"

Yup, you heard it here first. People who doubt Rapture(tm) theology are "morons" (no it does not say "morans") because we do not believe their fairy tales.

BTW, check out this person's Monty Python emoticon. I guess what Jesus really wants is a dry, iconoclastic, partly gay, British sketch comedy. Sorry Benny Hill, you blew it.

16. That was maybe the meanest joke I've ever seen.
Odd thing was it was "Christians" that did it to a fellow believer.

And you know I really doubt that a non-believer would ever dream of doing something so nasty.

It's like letting a kid wake up Christmas morning to no presents under the tree and then telling them Santa had a horrible accident and was killed. There will be no Christmas. EVER AGAIN.

If they'd do that to one of their OWN...what the hell would they do to someone not IN their club?

21. I'm afraid I can't muster much sympathy
at that. The whole thing was pure drivel. These people are just too batshit crazy for me, and I think that anyone who believes in that level of horseshit deserves whatever comes their way if they're that gullible.

Several times when I've had to deal with a fundie online, I'm asked them if they've kissed Hank's ass recently. That usually ends the conversation.

27. I couldn't even watch it
I tried, and it was turning my stomach just with the opening idiot.

1) The Rapture is a ridiculous idea anyway, but more importantly;

2) If you're a believer in a church that has The Rapture as a tenet, why do you believe it and make fun of it at the same time? They clown that did this is a real weasel.

28. The idea of the Rapture is absolutely juvenile and childish
The idea of the Rapture appeals to some very base and juvenile desires and fantasies, and definitely not to anything ennobling. I.e. the idea of having God's plan figured out and being one of a special group of people who is going to be raptured away while the rest of the world goes through hell, or more precisely the Great Tribulation.

And the God those people believe in has a character just like that of Adolf Hitler. I.e. their God condemns people to hell for all eternity if they happen to miss out on accepting Christ in this lifetime, or if they happen to guess wrong by choosing a religion other than Christianity.

The psychological dynamics which lead people to believe in that kind of God are really the same as those which led many "good" Germans to go along with Hitler. The unquestioning absolute acceptance of any authority, whether the Bible or Hitler, is the same. And it is not at all surprising that many fundamentalist Christians have been among the staunchest supporters of *.

Fundies think absolutely anything is justified to convert people. If they were right, logically anything would be justified. That includes scaring the shit out of children at so-called hell houses, harassment, controlling education, coercion and outright lies. After all, what is unethical if it involves saving ones immortal soul from an eternity of torment?

I am reminded that the Communists thought that absolutely anything was justified to spread Communism. And conservative Christians would indignantly rail that this was one of the consequences of a Godless philosophy. So the fundie Christians now turn out to be no different from the Communists, with their end justifying the means.
