Australia, Tasmania, and Papua New Guinea. Their habitat includes forest and open field; and one variety spends a great deal of time in the trees.
Their camouflage isn't unlike that of whitetail deer fawns. I'm not sure if you've ever stumbled upon a fawn in the woods; but their camouflage is most effective. I nearly stepped on one once...it was lying so still, and blended perfectly with the leaves forest floor and the dappled sunlight that penetrated.
