There's a cherry tree in the backyard of the house I moved into several months ago. I never saw any cherries on the damn thing, because the cherries are the same color as the leaves (both purple). What kind of cherries have purple-leaved trees and purple cherries with blood-red flesh?

1. They might be chokecherries |
|
They make good jam and wine, but are difficult to swallow raw, hence the name.

3. I don't know if they're chokecherries |
|
I tried one and the flesh was very sweet, but the skin was tart.

Are they tart? Hard to chew/swallow? I've never eaten a chokecherry before... actually I'm not sure if you're even supposed to eat them.
But these are really good. I've still only had one, though. I can only reach one branch to shake and if the cherries land on the deck, they get squished.

12. Definitely not chokecherries then |

It was very sweet and juicy, except for the skin, which was nicely tart.

5. I tried one last night |
|
...first by squeezing the juice onto one of my fingers and tasting that ("oh my god these are cherries!"), then by eating one. Nothing's happened to me yet... although they were a little on the over-ripe side.

6. I couldn't climb it anyway |
|
It looks like it would be easy to climb but it's literally right next to a fence.
