Any bets on how many days until she's "in the family way," again?

Part of my patient population is urogynecology- the most of which are getting their bladders hiked up again for stress incontinence in their 40's and 50's (and that's people usually with 3-5 vaginal deliveries). Given what I see every day, I honestly don't know how that Duggar woman goes through life without Depends.

24. Does she have a private room or is she in a ward?
My stepfather's cousin was married 9 years before they had their first. In the next 7 years they had 9 kids, all single births. She'd go in for her 6 week checkup and be 6 weeks pregnant. It was (still is) the talk of the family.

The cousin was asked how long they waited after a birth. The subject of this was his reply. (Of course this was in the days when you gave birth and spent 10 days in the hospital afterward)

Are they a family of hardcore conservatives? I haven't heard anything about their politics. I don't like it when the right wing says negative things about Hispanic people having lots of children, and I don't agree with the attacks on this family either. This society is too damn judgmental.

that they depend on public largesse to finance their large family. That's why all the TV specials and so on.

Nothing wrong with having a large family. But it is hard to take, and hypocritical IMO, coming from a RW bible thumpin' personal responsibility, pull yourself up by your bootstraps idiot when they are depending on the public to pay their way.

48. hard-core right wing,
the older children are expected to raise the younger children so the mother can get knocked up every few months, they homeschool the children with a fundamentalist christian course and very little time is dedicated to actually learning, the girls are taught "their place" and nothing more (in the kitchen and you get the rest).

There's more but I think we've skimmed the surface. Oh, and who wants to bet that the kids are on WIC and state insurance? I could bet that they don't make enough to pay insurance rates on all those kids. Hell, they probably don't make enough, after the bills and groceries, to pay for insurance for her. I'd think that quite a few insurance companies would probably deny her benefits-meaning that the taxpayers are paying for her to pop out a kid every year while they tell us how evil the government in general is.

Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 08:32 AM by Seashell Eyes
I mostly hate them because they got to have a normal childhood and they are denying their kids that through the "buddy system." They also shelter their children to the extreme. Home schooling AND home churching? Poor kids. In the first special, Jill, who was 13 at the time, said, "I hope the next baby will be a boy because that would be ten boys and five girls and it would be half and half, or half and, whatever." So sad. They have a new 7,000 square foot house with two bedrooms for the children. WTF? I don't think they appreciate their younger children as individuals. I despise them (the parents) but I'm also fascinated by them and look forward to each special.

Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 11:37 AM by Deep13
...because God somehow wants her to. They have been in the news before and are known Fundies. Apparently, they do what they think God wants without any regard to how that family will be sustained especially since most or all will grow to be adults. This is not the 1700s.

The general feeling is that it is a backward, unfeminist, unprogressive way to live. It relegates the mother to a walking uterus and produces excessive children at a time when we are already overpopulated. Instead of doing ones best for each child, it is mass production. Further, pregancy is dangerous. Sure, it is an individual choice, but when one resigns her will and judgment to whatever God wants, how much of a free choice is it really?

77. It is backward and unfeminist to critize a woman's right to choose

78. I'm not criticizing the right.
I'm criticizing the choice itself. There are too many of us. Maybe you can explain how having 17 children in the 21st century USA is a good choice. Anyway, I didn't start this thread.

80. FAir enough, but a woman can do what she chooses with her body
If the population gets reduced by 75% due to disease, and then you take it in your head that we need more babies, would you offer the same criticism of women who choose to go childless?

82. Let me put it this way.
She has a right to do what she wants.
I have a right to think what I want and to express those thoughts.

First of all, as horrible as it would be, the disease scenario you describe would be a chance to do what we cannot-get our population under control. So no, I would not be urging people to change a stable population into runaway growth.

What if the reason she is having 17 children is to perpetuate the white race? Many supremist groups urge that very thing. What if it was because she is Catholic (she is not) and simply believes the Pope's admonitions against birth control? What if she was living Harlem instead of a white-bread suburb? What do people generally say about producing children they cannot care for? (To some degree that is the case here.) What if this was a common practice?

In this case they are doing it, whether they realize it or not, to perpetuate socially conservative religious fundamentalism. It is sometimes observed that the people least able to raise children well are the most likely to have them. She is doing it because she thinks that is what God is commanding. Making a person should only been done with the greatest sobriety and thoughtfulness. Oh well, my imaginary sky-daddy wants it is little more than making people on a whim.

We are not talking about five children. We are not talking about eight children. We are talking about seventeen--so far. So many means each one will be poorer, more ignorant, less attended-to, more likely to be sick than if there were fewer. One more kid and they will have three times the number on the Brady Bunch. It bugs me that people think this is something to be happy about. It is appauling. And the paternalistic, religious brainwashing she had means it is not a free choice.

87. So you have no problem with the fundy abortion "counselors" who tell women not to have an abortion?

89. What did I write that could possibly make you think that?
I'm sorry to put it this way, but that is the kind of non sequitur I have come to expect from my O'Reilly-fan mother.

She could fart and deliver the baby.

So no gassy foods in the last trimester of her pregnancies.

81. Monty Python's "Meaning of Life" redone for the Duggars:
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 12:07 PM by Oregonian
(We see the Duggar house. A stork flies above it, and drops a baby down the chimney.)

Duggar Dad: Oh Bloody Hell!

(Inside the house. A pregnant woman is at the sink. With a cry a new-born baby, complete with umbilical cord, drops from between her legs onto the floor.)

Mother: Get that would you, Jinger...
Girl: All right, Mom.

(The girl takes the baby. Mom carries on.)

Duggar Dad: The legislature's closed! There's no more work. We're destitute.
(His several dozen children murmur in dismay.)
Duggar Dad: Come in, my little ones. I've got no option but to sell you all for scientific experiments.

Duggar Dad: (singing)

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Duggar Daughter: (singing)

Let the heathens spill theirs,
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay,
For each sperm that can't be found.

88. My wife's grandmother had 18 kids
She's not with us anymore but she was fascinating to listen to. Her stories about farming during the depression had you all ears.
