and Led Zeppelin. The Led Zeppelin boys met Elvis, more than once in the '70s, and offered to be his house band on a recording date...that could have been very interesting. I believe Elvis also talked with James Brown about fronting the Famous Flames for some project, but it came to nothing.
As for songwriters, Bruce Springsteen wrote "Fire" for Elvis (in the '70s) and Roy Orbison wrote "Only The Lonely" (in 1960) for him. Both would have been great choices, I think, though the writers ended up doing excellent versions of each.

2. Forrest I think I remember a band called 'Dread Zeppelin' |
|
that had an Elvis impersonator as front man! They'd do Elvis and Zep songs I think, like maybe 'Heartbreaker Hotel' I think I am remembering correctly.
Anyway, you might wanna check 'em out!
My fave rocker, Johnny Thunders, played with just about everybody I ever wanted him to play with. God bless him!

7. Yep, they had an impersonator (of sorts) |
|
as the lead vocalist. What I've heard is very...um...interesting! :D
I looked up Johnny Thunders...it sounds like he sure did play with a lot of people, especially on the ironically-titled So Alone. It is sad that he, too, is gone, and apparently just as things were starting to get better again.

3. You can see that first combo in "The Last Waltz" |
|
It also has The Band and Dr. John, The Band and Joni Mitchell...and more. Awesome film. Finishes with a great set piece of "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris. Interspersed with fascinating interviews. Did I mention it's an awesome film?

5. Oh yes, performing Caravan. |
|
But what I would have like to seen is an album and a tour. Can't happen anymore, with two members of The Band passed away and the remaining members not likely to ever work together again.
Neil Young and Joni Mitchell doing Helpless, that was awesome.

6. Mike Keneally and Kevin Gilbert |
|
They did a small amount of work together (specifically, Gilbert provided some backing vocals for Keneally's first album, and they did a track together for a Yes tribute album), but we can only dream of what they might have achieved if they had been able to do more work together.
