Do you ever get tired...
of being good, of behaving yourself?

Do you ever want to kick over the traces, let loose, and generally raise hell?

Some days I am so fucking tired of being the good mom, the good wife, the good citizen...

And I just want to act out and be crazy!

And then my mature side emerges...

And it's all over.....

*sigh*

14. I've spent my whole life wanting to go crazy and do fun, dangerous, irresponsible
things.

On the one or two occasions when I have (usually fueled by too much booze), I've ended up saying or doing something that hurt somebody else. I regret that immensely. Some people can do that kind of thing and get away with it. Not me, evidently. :(

19. what does it mean to "kick over the traces"?
I get a wild hair every now and then. In the past I've started smoking again when that happened. I am getting to the age where it will wreck my skin if I do that though, (vanity over health, lol) so I have to find a new way to rebel. :hi:

29. okay
A horse is harnessed to a carriage, wagon or cart with traces, which are the leather straps that run horizontally along the horse's sides. If through overexcitement or excess of energy the horse starts to buck and kick out, if it isn't quickly brought under control it may manage to kick right over the traces, i.e. get its leg over these straps. Your horse and cart are now in a horrid mess - a bit like having your dog wrap its lead round your legs and a lamp-post, but much more dangerous and harder to disentangle. (VSD)

: : : It this something used metaphorically? Used currently, or now archaic?

: : It's used metaphorically for people who are supposed to follow certain rules and protocols, but get out of line--deliberately. With horses it's sometimes hard to say what's deliberate or not. Humans who kick over the traces do it on purpose, but sometimes they are provoked. If you yank somebody's chain, he may kick over the traces. Sorry about the mixed metaphor. Sometimes kicking over the traces is a bid for freedom of a sort, frequently on the part of humans, sometimes on the part of horses. But someone else will have to supply examples.

27. Sometimes I get tired
of brawling with non-union workers, goons, bosses.

I feel like I'd just like to meet someone nice, settle down and raise a family.
Mow a lawn, play with children, go to a PTA meeting, have the neighbors over for dinner.

And then my mature side emerges...

And it's all over...

Funny how things work out, Peg. :hi:

35. well, I hear ya, girlfriend
But you know what really makes you old? NOT PLAYING!!! Yep, people who stop playing are the oldest, most boring people around!

I have a very spontaneous personality myself, and have found myself doing things like buying tickets on Ebay to a concert 800 miles away- well, they were cheap and great seats to boot- to see one of my favorite groups, the Barenaked Ladies.

Luckily, my good friend didn't question my sanity and went along for the ride- boy, boy did we have fun! This was a special winter concert with them, Nelly Furtado, Jessica Simpson, the Calling, Michelle Branch- and oh, yeah- O-town. Well, we were four rows back, but all of the teeny boppers had to leave, as it was a school night- so we made our way up to the front row!!

I shook hands with Ed and Steve! And we will always have sweet memories of Ed wearing on both his head and his guitar the pampers that we brought as we could not find a store in KC that sold cheap undies. You have to be a die hard fan to understand.

Neither one of us wanted to come back to reality, but maturity finally set in and we dutifully made our way back home.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is- you need to get together with a girlfriend and do something crazy. Sorry, hubbie won't do- you know that you'd have more fun with a girlfriend. I don't know- go to Las Vegas, Tijuana, a day spa- no matter- just go and PLAY!!!

But really, Peggy, you should probably watch your language. I think that the morality police probably have you on their list. Why I think that this is the second time this week that you've used THAT word. And that doesn't even count all of the sh*t and hell's that might have come from your area!

36. I dunno: you're being kinda vague. When you say "act out and be crazy" do you mean
showering without a showercap? or painting your finger and toenails twenty clashing colors? or staying out past midnight at a local bar? or do you mean stealing a car, driving down to Mexico, filling the trunk with marijuana and then setting the dope on fire just before trying to crash through at the US border?

69. Your friends here are right
You do need a major vacation! But in between times, you also need minor vacations -- you gotta let yourself off that leash on a regular basis! An author I like, Colin Wilson, used to write about the importance of vacations (well, he probably still does I think he's still alive~!) and how the human spirit loses its spontaneity and hence its joy in living from the drudgery of day-to-day life, and having to be in the 'robot-mode' so much of the time. In fact, we spend so much time in 'robot-mode' as we have to in order to drive to work every day, do our boring jobs, come home and clean up the kitchen and do the laundry etc etc .. .. that we can have TROUBLE coming OUT of the robot-mode, even when we want to --- which is the importance of vacations to re-charge our human spirit.

Seriously, depriving ourselves is like depriving ourselves of drinking water to stay alive and healthy.

Mini-vacations can include meditation time, getting out for an early morning walk, of course hikes / a few peaceful hours to yourself away from home (or not!), the usual off to dinner and the movies with your girlfriend(s), maybe learning a new hobby.

But do take that wild and crazy trip too!

I think the urge to want to drop everything and tear up your world is from letting yourself suffer from too much self-deprivation for too long.

Well, you may be right....

But right now it's impossible, for reasons I stated in my post to GoddessOfGuinness...

I don't normally carry on like this...

Once school starts, I will be much happier!

I've had my major vacation this year already...3 weeks abroad, Germany, and the Czech Republic...

Thank you, though...I'll be OK...

83. I am glad you posted this thead, Peggy.
Because I understand how you feel. But be glad. Use me as an example:

Because of the thoughts, words, and pictures I have posted on DU, I:

- Will never be able to run for public office. ANY public office.

- May - MAY - have trouble pursuing my interests in the future at a political think tank post-PhD.

- Am risking blackmail if any person in this forum hated me enough to carry that sort of vendetta into the real world... especially if my writing were to actually take off or if my scholastics carried me somewhere.

I'm certain that there are more consequences. All of this stems from keeping my inhibitions in check - actually severely repressed - because I never permitted myself access to them for many, many years (frankly I never thought I deserved them). Feelings such as sexuality, joy, love, friendship, an outspoken, unpopular opinion, or so much more. But I am a grown woman and I am prepared to accept any consequences that arise from my decisions. My God if any DU'er met me in real life they wouldn't recognize me. I am quiet, somewhat serious, and overly modest.

So I suppose what I'm saying is not to kick yourself for controlling your inhibitions. I understand the need to go wild, and maybe you should in moderation ;) but don't go crazy.

I am happy to have posted this...

I'm not so sure about your not running for public office...

There are folks who post here who have done that, in spite of past actions...

I'm just venting tonight. Every now and then I feel this way, but I've never acted on it before...

It passes...

Until the next time...

I use my writing and photography as outlets...

And once school starts at the end of the month, I will be busy with that.

And I will be glad of it...

Until the next time...

Thanks, sweetie...

116. No, I have the opposite problem
I get tired of feeling like the

1. bad daughter
2. bad sister-in-law
3. bad daughter-in-law
4. bad wife

Because of #1, I never had children, because my mother advised I wasn't "cut out for it", so I can't add "bad mother" to the list. However, I'm starting to resolve #1 in my mind...my mom has a lot of carry-over guilt b/c of her relationship with her mother (extremely intense, but can't go into details to preserve privacy and dignity).

As for nos. 2,3,4...it's been a bad week (88 y.o. FiL had a triple bypass), and I just need to realize my in-laws had a lot of problems before I came on the scene, and many more since then, that never involved me. Really, I was only involved in 3 flare-ups in the dozen or so, since I came on the scene. Otherwise, most of the dustups have come from gift-buying mistakes...like, why on earth did I think my sister-in-law want a matching Van Gogh umbrella/waterproof tote to carry from her car in a very large corporate parking lot. And when our great-nephew was 7, why did I get him a glow-in-the-dark mobile of the solar system and stick-on stars for his bedroom, and a year later a Geo-Safari...About a year later, I was accused of being a college-educated snob in a big dust-up... Yet, I feel so much guilt, because my husband is so sweet, and he tries so hard to please me AND satisfy his dad and his sister.

My first impression here is that you're trying way too hard to please everyone else...

And in so doing, not taking care of yourself...

I could be wrong, of course...

Take care of yourself....Be true to yourself...

And be respectful of the folks around you...

That might work out better for you...

Your husband sounds like a prince! And a keeper...
