Is there a way to completely erase the slate on DU?
Erase everything and start over? Start afresh? Try something new?

Actually, now that I've said that: Wouldn't it be great to completely erase the slate in life? Start afresh? Try something new?

;)

1. I wouldn't want to erase the slate on DU, but on my life?
Yeah, I'd like to erase some parts of it.

2. If I cleaned my slate, I might forget all my valuable mistakes.

3. But couldn't you move on, still retaining the lessons learned from those mistakes?

12. Maybe; but some lessons are best learned by
accepting the consequences of one's actions. And sometimes the mistake has to be made multiple times before it sinks in.
It's not unlike the way some alcoholics need to hit rock-bottom before they can begin to recover.

16. That's true. I suppose it depends on the severity of the mistake.
If one were to simply say, however, "I really don't like who I am and where my life is heading," then I think it would be easier to wipe the slate clean. But you're correct. A more severe problem like alcoholism becomes a life long journey. One can never stop being an alcoholic, from what I can understand.

25. One can never stop being human...
Much would be lost if you ceased to exist because you decided to become someone else. In fact, I suspect those who disliked themselves the first time around would feel no differently toward their second selves. The key to metamorphosis begins with accepting and loving the person you are...flaws and all.

The joy, the pain, the pride, and the regrets are all part of the experience. I think what's most important is not to dwell on any one element; but rather to allow them to exist in the moment, and let them go the next.

Guilt and regret are tools we can use to evolve from our mistaken notions, and to feel sympathy for those who are in the midst of experiencing them. Beyond that, they really serve no purpose. Using these emotions to punish one's self will not restore what has been lost or undo what has been done.

It's sad that one violation of trust will cast a shadow of doubt over each relationship affected by it. Embrace that sorrow, and feel compassion growing stronger within you. Observing this is as deeply stirring as watching a beautiful sunrise.

I hope you're feeling better today! :hug::hug::hug:

7. Yes. Yes. Yes.
No.No. No.

You could close your DU account, then re-register*, to expand on the yes answers. I don't think it would be great to erase the slate in life, to expand on the no answers.

:D

8. Well, my dear Writer...
You could change your username...

And that would wipe out your entire record here on DU...

I think that would allow you to start afresh!

13. I don't know, CalPeg. I am "Writer" because that's what I do.
If I truly wanted to describe my reinvention in DU terms, my initial username should have been "Broadcaster."

See my reply in your thread on controlling inhibitions. It explains everything.

21. Mental markers
Write down each year you have been around, and for each year write something down if you can something that changed your life or had an impact - memories etc.

You can add to it as you remember more. Painful things, and good things (separate them).

After you write them down think about them. Flesh out details for those events and how you see them now and how they affect you or did.

It can start at any year you like. The good, the bad. The memories you most recall.

I did this tonight myself mentally. Then reviewed and saw a lot of little things I left out, and put in some more.

Looking back - well, there was a lot of smiles - and a lot of hurt.

Some years are just blacked out, not sure what to mention. Other years racked with items.

23. Hard to say what I'd be under all this mess.
I probably wouldn't like it, and it's probably not "fresh."

If I ever go off my meds and decide to hitchhike naked to Alaska (or something), I've instructed my friends and family to shoot me in the butt with a tranquilizer dart and drag me back to my present reality.

In the past, when I've decided to "try something new," it's often ended up badly.

Anyways, in my book of life, I'm my own favorite character. So far it's been a pretty good story, even those rotten parts that have left me scarred, even the parts I thought were boring at the time.

Okay I probably wouldn't jump out of a moving car in Berkeley again, try to climb a steep ocean cliff at night while drunk, wreck my car while driving distraught, and stuff like that... but if I was young, single, uh-oh, old and senile, maybe I would.

For now I content myself with lesser adventures, but when I'm an old dude, I fully intend to be really, really eccentric and piss off my great grandkids when they have to pick me up at the pound.

Gonna grab the dog catcher's donuts and RUN!

31. Why? You'd just do the same things over again.
 At least I would. There was a reason I did them the first time, and unless i become someone else, I'll do the same things under the same circumstances again.

Except I wouldn't eat those oysters from that shack on Dauphin Island...
