Man mauled to death at Ving Rhames' house

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A 40-year-old man was mauled to death by as many as four dogs at the home of Ving Rhames on Friday, authorities said.

Ving Rhames is best known for roles in "Pulp Fiction" and "Mission: Impossible."

The victim, who hasn't been identified, had worked at the actor's home for about two years and was responsible for caring for the dogs, said Los Angeles Police officer Sandra Gonzalez.

Four mastiffs were seized by animal services, she said.

Police got a call at 7:15 a.m. from someone reporting a dead body at the home. Gonzalez didn't know who made the call.

2. I figured he was mauled by Ving
As a matter of fact, I still think so. The dogs were framed.

6. mastiffs
not a good way to go...they might have each weighed as much as he did, I sure wouldn't want to take on four at once.

10. I saw that on TMZ earlier
They supposedly don't know if he died from the dog attack or from a stroke or heart attack. I guess there have never been any problems with the dogs. It sounds gruesome. http://www.tmz.com/2007/08/03/ving-rhames-dog-maul-man-to-death/

11. I wonder if he still has "Kong."
This 1999 article says:

In a 1999 interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Pulp Fiction star showed off his “petrifying” Ambullneo mastiff named Samson and his three mastiff puppies — Storm, Scorsese and Cage (the latter two were named after director Martin Scorsese and actor Nicolas Cage, with whom Rhames worked on the film Bringing Out the Dead).

He also talked about his 170-pound Fila Brasileiro named Kong.

“The dog was actually bred to guard slaves,” Rhames said. “It was the only dog they found that had the temperament to guard a slave. It could be around you every day, but if you tried to run away, it would deal with you like it never saw you before.”

The Times reporter joked, “Just as you are thinking how helpful this will be to the forensic specialists, he pulls the dog away with his free hand before it can playfully disembowel you.”

13. What is it about people who want to own

these more aggresive dog breeds?

When I go to the flea market, it's the same thing. People parading around their dogs that need a 3/4 " chain.

I think of that the same way I think of a Hummer owner.

edit: My condolences to this man's family and Ving Raimes.

14. Bull mastiffs aren't normally an aggressive breed of dog
And NO dog requires a 3/4" chain. Idiots just put them on their dog to make them seem tougher.

18. If I may, a word on Mastiffs
There are several kinds of Mastiff. I haven't seen anything specific on the particular breed in this case.

The vast, vast majority of the mastiff breeds have a very quiet confidence. In other words, these dogs are the type that will let you into the house, no barking, no vicious backlash for daring cross a border. However, you WILL NOT get back out. These are dogs that, in public, you could accidentally step on a tail, and they just kinda look at you. No aggression, no anger.

The Neopolitan, English and others of the ilk are largely respected as fantastic family dogs, great with children and strangers allowed into the house. They aren't aggressive.
